Default Smoking and Ticking after wreck.

Hello everyone-

I recently dumped my bike. '78 XS 1100. I know this is a Honda website, but my questions have nothing to do with the make/model.

After starting the bike up after bringing it home I noticed a slight tick and black smoke coming out the exhausts. Not a huge cloud or anything...but while revving it is noticeable.

The header pipes are pretty beat up. In some spots they are near closed shut. Could this be causing both my problems?

I figured the valves might be chattering a bit due to the restriction.

The bike also laid on its side for about 35-40 minutes....it has only been run for maybe 15 minutes off and on total.

Any information would be awesome.

Thanks.

oil prob got in the top end while it was down. which could be causing noise and smoke.

uh.. i would imagine that the headers being nearly pinched shut would be at least part of your problem...

Yeah...that's what I figured...there was quite a good sized hole in one of them too...the metal was peeled back and I was able to close the hole up , but I know it's still leaking.

Before I get too much invested into the bike I want to make sure it's still drivable. The front forks will be here tomorrow. So all I need now is the tire...which is scheduled to get here Friday.

After running it up and down the road I'll know if I'll be spending anymore money on it to fix it up...or trying to sell for parts.

Today I went out and drained the oil....it was contaminated with gas. Due to it laying on its side for so long...

I'll keep this thread updated if anyone cares.

Well, the ticking would almost deffinately be coming from the hole in your exhaust also, if not from the valves as well. good luck with it.

If it is from the valve it is because of the header being almost shut off right?

I'm pretty sure no damage was done to the actual motor...the ticking scared me, but after inspecting the headers I'm pretty sure that is where the problem lies.
