Default pointless question thread:

a friend and i were talking, and we were wondering:

why are all OEM sportbike wheels 3 spokes and essentially the same design?

Are they? I think it just happens to be what's "in" at the time. Look at a few of the past bikes, and they've got 6 spokes (F2, F3, etc).

basically a company will develop a design and stick with it because it cheaper to keep producing the same stuff instead of designing something new and making that

thats why the 600rrs have 3 spokes as well as 1000rrs

just remember motorcycle companies will do as little as possible to make the most money as long as its not a new developing bike such as a the new 600rr. thats how they fund their moto gp efforts

this is also why the honda 50cc dirt bikes have the same engines from the 70s. the engine costs honda like 15 dollars to make.

they make a killing off of retaining design

Yay, no three spokes for mine.

00-01 = 6 spokes
02-06 = 5 spokes

my RC51 has the same wheels as an F3 CBR. Although my rear wheel is wider, it's essentially the same design. In 2002 they switched to a nice five spoke wheel.
I hardly see all companies as having 3 spoke wheels, but i'm sure you can understand that 3 is less than 4 and so on, and therefore potentially lighter.

More than likely it was a cost saving maneuver by the manufacturers...
