Clutch going bad????
i bought my bike used 99' 900RR and im having some problems with it slipping back to N when i shift into 2nd. A friend of mine said before i go getting the trans rebuild check the clutch plates for burns. so last night i pulled the clutch and sure enough, the left side of every plate was burned. When i bought the bike i was told that it was a new clutch in there. could it be that the plates were the old ones? also underneath the clutch there are 2 rings that look similar to piston rings (without the gap). The ring on top is rubbing on the first plate waring into it, is that normal? Do i need to replace the everything? if you want more pics of something let me know i can add some closeups

Dunno bout the 2 rings but the steels defeiitely have some pretty major hot spots there (in the pic).
Fer $12.00 you can buy a Barnett clutch spring kit - that'll take care of any spring problem ya might have (will also increase lever effort as well).
If the steels haven't warped then just clean em up with a light sanding and reinstall (make sure ya soak the fbers too before reinstallation).
I'm not a Honda guy so I dunno what yer 2 rings are but ya better verify they shuld be there - check a local Honda dealer parts dept to see what they are.

Re: Clutch going bad???? (D2N)
sounds good. As far as i can tell just using my eyes alone, it doesn't seem to be warped. what are the tolerances for the plate being flat? is looking good enough? Also you mentioned "Spring Problems". Im kinda new to bikes so sorry for sounding a little dumb but, what kind of spring problems could i be having? and last, what do you mean by soaking the clutch? later when i do replace the clutch all together is there a brand you recommend? thanks

Always stick with OE fibers and steels - they cost more but they're well worth the extra $.
Mebbe I misread the title - I thought there might have been a clutch spring issue (could be, depends on how many miles are on the bike).
Barnett clutch springs - I've put a set of em in a coupla bikes that I thought the clutch was fried and they worked well, especially fer $12.00.
If the clutch fibers weren't soaked in oil before installation then that can (but not always) cause some seating problems too, I just mentioned it as a precaution..
If there are alotta miles on the bike then ya might as well get a new clutch cable too, save some headaches (it is a cable clutch, right?).
