I "filled up" my gas tank once again this morning. The reserve had kicked in several days ago and was flashing all 4 bars on the way to the gas station. So upon filling the 2002 F4i up, I could only get 4.042 gallons into the tank. Filled up all the way to the neck of the gas cap area, even had a little dribble overflow and back into the tank. Upon searching and investigating, isn't the reserve supposed to come on for 01+ F4i's when there's 0.92 gallons left? Assuming that I was down to the fourth bar flashing, i'd assume i'd have roughly 0.2-0.25 gallons left....but could only fill up with 4 gallons.

Side question: How much extra can you really put in the gas tank if you sit on the bike with it upright instead of with the sidestand down?

I think the the fuel capacity is 4.8 gallons (.9 of that as a reserve). I've never thought much of it, when I fill up. I'll check it out next time I fill up, though.

sit the bike up straight and then fill it...

the bike doesn't need to be upright to fill it. That's why there's a little bar spanning the mouth of the gas tank. When it's on its side stand you only need to fill to that bar. Too much more than that is probably too much.
Also, standing the bike upright couldn't possibly get you the other .8-.9 gallons, so that's not the problem.
When i had my F4i i just assumed the Reserve light was lying to me in order to keep me from pushing my bike. I once rode 165 miles on a tank and still only put in around 4 gallons, so i'm assuming there's still a little more gas in there.

idk then...i put it up to the bar as well...but, i have it on the kickstand so i can stretch for a minute...

but of course, just ride around the gas station once you hit your reserve then walk it to the pump lol

ive noticed you can get quite a bit more gas in with it stand straight up i lean it till it looks full then stand it up for the remainder and you can get a bunch more in there...i never go past 2 bars on my reserve so i only get roughly 4 gals anyway...
