Hm. If you're mature I'd suggest to start slow on the CBR. My buddy did and is doing excellent. But if not, can't go wrong with a 250 kawi. Plus it's sportier.

Whatever bike you get, you need to respect the throttle. Most people I know say that if they started on a 1000, they wouldn't be here, so obviously I'd suggest you stay away from them. 600's can be just as crazy if you grab a handful of throttle. As a matter of fact, most 600's will do a 1/4 mile within a second of a 1000's time. 600's aren't tame as a lot of new riders think.

SV650's and F4i are a popular options if you can't get yourself to buy a 250R.

Just remember, you might think you wont look "cool" or "badass" enough on your Ninja 250, but you will look better than dead on a 1000cc

Alright i just re-read it and guess i interepreted it wrong. People say a 250 is always a nice starter bike but others say 600, it's all up to you and which you feel comfortable with, not too cocky though.

if you want to floss, hell get a new 2008 ninja 250. they look good and even after TTL should not be much more than 4200, new!

otherwise, pick up used ninja 250's for 2k all day!

My 96 YZF600 has been pretty good to start on, but I've got myself in trouble on that anyway. You trick yourself into thinking it's gutless when you are cruising, but sweepign past 9-10k rpm it starts to accelerate in a hurry. A light 250 would be great for the U-turns I have to do every morning, though.
