Why is VTEC used on the new Fit.
What I can't understand is my 92 civic hatchback doesn't have VTEC yet puts out almost the same amount of horsepower and torque with same 1.5L displacement. Let's compare:
1992 civic hatchback
102 Horsepower
98 Torque
34/40 mpg city/highway gas mileage
curb weight 2108lbs
2007 fit
109 Horsepower
Torque 105
33/38 mpg city/highway gas mileage
curb weight 2432lbs
It seems the car has become heavier (by 300lbs!) over the years with almost the same amout of horsepower/torque and mileage. Of course the fit is a 4-door hatchback.
This begs the question. What kind of VTEC is being used here? Is it VTEC-E or a newer form of VTEC with 3 modes of operation? More over, why go with a more complicated engine when the horses and torque don't change by much? Probably emissions related.

yup
emmisions economy and usuable power.
Im sure if you look at the curves between the two the fit will have a much more usable powerband.
Look at the weight that the new ivtec is pushing around, and it still keeps nearly the same MPG.
Imagine the MPG you would get if the fit was 300lbs lighter like your EG.

I'll take the fit engine, etc and plunk it into my civic. Just have to wait for one to crash so I can snag one at the junk yard.

You guys are failing to mention the new EPA/DOT standards for measuring fuel economy and horsepower, that's why you have seen some cars with a slight decline in advertised horespower output, and decline in mpg, if this car was rated on older standards it would probably be advertised as making 115hp and getting around 43-45mpg on the highway.....

The Fit would also make more power if it was not so restricted by emission regulations and the restrictive OEM intake/exhaust parts.

Here is a really good link to read up on the Fit's available engines.

Nevermind, brain fart. I forgot, you 'mericans use a different size "gallon" than the rest of the world.

Awesome article! Heck they compare the L-series to the D-series!!! Maybe I'll do an L-series swap into my 92 civic hatchback in the future.
