Icon5 Automatic shifter button

This is probably a stupid question but just out of curiosity.

I have a 2007 honda fit with automatic transmision
What does the button under the shift stick (****) do?

I always push when changing from parking to drive/ reverse, however what does it do ? I noticed that i can just push the **** to the mode I want without pushing it. So what is it for ?

I'm talking about this button:

Default Re: Automatic shifter button

Read your owner's manual. The transmission locks in the Park position. The button unlocks the lever so that it can be moved out of "Park".
