I've never had issues with my 2009 Honda Element's windows but yesterday I was putting the window up and I heard a faint tap sound and the window stopped working up or down, it was stuck 2/3 up but by the time I made it home the window had gradually dropped all the way into the door. I can hear the motor working when I try to put the window up but the window remains in the door. I assume I will need another motor assembly but is that true or is there possibly something else going on?

You need to remove the door card and see what is going on with the winder motor / regulator.
