seatbelt recall on honda's
is it true that if your seatbelts don't retract fully when undone you can get them replaced for free at the dealership. I think this might be for any car, but I only care about my civic, my only love
By the way here is the list of recalled things and other things people reported or had problems with.

Well I know they were recalled for a couple of years but, if your seatbelts or anything else that is safety related mess up, I'm pretty sure they have to fix it for free.

I have a '90 Civic sedan DX with automatic seatbelts. All of a sudden, the seatbelt motor stopped working. The belts would go forward, but not back. I took it to the dealer and got it fixed for free. They tried to charge me like $600 for it, but I argued a bit, telling them it was a recall and that its a safety issue and they did it for free. Just don't mess with the belts yourself. They'll check to see if you messed them up yourself trying to fix them.
listen up...i work at a dealer and have done so since 89 so i have a clue as to what i am saying.
first...the "recall" concerning the seatbelts was for inspection of the front buckles(specifically the Takata manufactured) for cracks. if no cracks were found then "guide plates" were attached to the buckle to assist the proper insertion angle but if cracks were found then both front buckles were replaced.
second, concerning the lifetime warranty on the seatbelt system. if the belts do not retract, then the first thing we do is inspect the retractor to see if the belt is twisted(common) or if the upper guide is contaminated with dirt and gunk build up(even more common). only if there is a mechanical defect in the retractor would the retractor be replaced. i clean upper guides for slow retracting belts just about everyday.
third, about those annoying automatic belts. yep those are covered under the warranty when they stop working. i have replaced control units and motor assemblies on these many times but the most probable failure of these systems(on the civic four door and wagon) is corrosion on the postitve battery terminal. this is where the auto belt motor fuses are and i have seen the postive terminal corrode the small fuse assembly right off...this is not covered under warranty but is easily fixed with a pair of inline fuse holders.
any questions?

if you cut it out then it is unlikely that the dealer will cover it. as i said most of the time a "broken" seatbelt isn't actually defective. but you can always try.
