RPM's showing as double what they are!
Cant figure this one out.. My tachometer is showing double the actual engine speed. Turned on my 89 crx si this morning, and it idled at 3,000 to warm up!! Thing is the engine sounded normal, so its only the tach thats off. Driving around a bit confirmed this as i managed to hit 8k on the tach quite quickly and easily. My Haynes manual tells me the tach works off the distributor, so what do I need to do to fix this? new distributor? any help would be appreciated. thanks guys

Well ignitors are not exactly cheap, the speedo is not much from a salvage yard if you have a standard USDM model like Si or DX. I personally have never seen an ignitor cause this problem only, to me it sounds like your RPM gauge is off. One way to easliy find out is to tap into the blue wire on the 2 plug connector on the distributor (tach signal from igniotor) but you will need a known working tach to check it with like either autometer or OEM (of course OEM will just plug up in your dash though) last time I priced an ignitor for my B16 it was like $185.00 so I hope that is not your problem (and I don't think this is your problem). Either way I would like to know what ends up being your remedy.

Well, turned on the car again this morning, and the problem has gone away. If it does come back though, I do have a spare distributor for my car. So, if i need an ignitor, i could probably just pull it from that one instead of having to spend 185 bucks. or i could just throw on the new distributor and call it a day....

Well if that is your problem than that is cool since you have an extra ignitor. I am curiuos to what the problem is for sure, if you find out let me know.
