Could it be the steering wheel lock? Tell him to turn the steering wheel to one side and then turn the key. It should be able to turn all the way and start the car.

yeah, try what click said. by rotating the steering wheel back and forth it should disengage the locking system and allow you to turn the key.

i have this same problem on mine. its really easy and no need to spend money on it. when it does that (which shouldnt be often) you can turn the key backwards to the accesory posistion and it will straighten out. if you still just dont want the hassle, go to autozone and buy a new lock cylinder

Cylinder is worn out. Replace.

PS: One thing that "wears-out" the ign cylinder lock is carrying a bunch of keys on your keyring. Does you dad carry a bunch of keys around? The weight wears it out, faster than if you only carry a few keys.
