OEM Honda Parts from a Dealership...a Racket?
I've figured out how to defeat the racket that dealerships run selling OEM parts.
I used to order all my OEM parts online from http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com or http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org. Awesome prices, but unless you order a lot, by the time you pay S&H, you're not much better off from going to the dealership, plus you have to wait for the parts to arrive.
So here's what I did today. I went to the aforementioned website and made a list of parts I wanted to order, then wrote down the price of the parts individually and as a whole. I called my local dealership and talked to a guy at parts. I told him I had accidentally talked to a parts counter at a dealership on the other side of town and didn't feel like driving all the way there, and if I could see if I could get the same price they offered me at the other dealership.
I told him all the parts I wanted:
Timing belt
Tensioner
Water pump
Tensioner spring
Tensioner bolt
Keep in mind, the website quoted me $133.06 for these parts. The guy at my local dealership told me for those parts it would be $195.60...that's 47% more than the website quoted me! I told him how much the 'other' dealership quoted me, and he said they gave me the wholesale price. After a brief pause, he said he would match that price if I came to see him. I told him I'd be there today.
So...after some sleuth work, I just saved myself a cool $64.54...I didn't really have to do any coaxing to get it out of him either...just told him the price 'they' gave me.

Yeah but that would only work once, maybe twice but thats it. You wouldn't get the same I'll match the wholesale price again.
I just got to know the parts manager real well and when I'm buying high price stuff, I quote the prices from the web. Due to the fact that I'm not trying to "nickle & dime" him on everything, he will normally match the price.
It's really a matter of making "friends" and then not raking them over the coals for a deal all the time.
You comment about the cost of shipping is correct, however when ordering stuff for here in California, not having to pay for the tax covers the shipping cost (on ground shipping).

Well, I just went and picked up my parts. They actually did better...only $127 with tax!
Avery told me to ask for him every time I need parts from now on and he'll give me wholesale prices. Guess it is about just making friends.

well i guess i am lucky then i work at a honda dealership i get good deals all the time just tell them you work for another dealer not a honda or acura dealer though and they should give u a discount
i work in parts at a dealership, there is no way we could match those prices. That's better than we give to our best commercial customers. assuming the 195.60 is straight list, your getting better than a 30% discount.
though my prices beat anything you guys can get, i unfortunatly can't share. My boss is a shiester about stuff like that.

I have a laptop with a Verizon wirelss EVDO (dsl speed over cell network where available .. me in Atlanta). So I pull up one of those net dealers with prices for some of the stuff I would like to buy from the dealer, in front of the parts manager and he basically says 'no way can I match those prices'.
