Modified HF Steering Column. lowered 3.5 inches
I posted last week regarding about swapping a si steering column in a HF to get tilt on steering wheel. Well, I got the whole assembly from a si and was going to do the swap.
Once I opened up the plastic covers, I realized the column is held by one bolt at the end near the firewall and at near the light signal controls, there are two nuts holding to two weld on bolts and two other bolts holding the whole assembly. So I got creative, instead of removing the whole assembly and swapping it out. I just lowered the whole hf column by replacing the two bolts with longer ones, and adding two extra nuts to the weld on bolts as stoppers, sandwiching the bracket on the column with two nuts on eaching bolt.
As a result, I lowered the steering wheel by about 3.5 inches (2x more than si or dx tilt ). Just right for me. and it's barely clearing the fuse cover. if someone's interested in doing this to their hf. It works great !
I'll post some pics later

post some pics and straight forward instructions i don't like how my steering wheel is so high. 2 inches lower would probably do it for me cuz i don't wanna bang my knees.
where did you get the longer bolts and how much longer??

Sorry, I didn't take any pics when I had everything apart. But the bolts are 10x1.25mm. get 2.5inch long ones. and two nuts of the same size. once you remove the steering wheel and the combo control. it's pretty straight forward from there. if you look at the last picture. you'll see the two hole where the bolts go in. and the other two in the back is where you have to sandwich with two nuts

Re: Modified HF Steering Column. lowered 3.5 inches (RaceFacer)
RaceFace. Nothing's changed except for the longer bolts and two additional nuts. basically I just lowered the mounting points. I love how my momo wheel now sits on my lap instead of high up in the air
Sorry for the lack of a better explanation. but if you have pic from the service menual or just take off steering wheel and combo control to see the mounting points. It's really straight forward.
here's the bracket behind the combo control

is the STD steering columb adjustable? it looks like, on mine, that the lever to raise or lower the column was broken off b/c it looks as though something used to be there. oh well, i like your trick better...

they want it lower so they recline the seat all the way back and be a gangsta...
the steering wheel should be in the best place for driving....
