I can't Rev past 3000rpm... ...grrrr
I have a b16/crx which has been running fine for over a year.
Today after an hour and a half drive, in the middle of it actually, the car started to bog on me, i was around 5000rpm.
Basically what is happening is this. Reving up to 3000rpm can be very boggy, sometime it lets me, sometimes it doesn't. I cannot rev past 3k in any gear. It just bogs me. What is a little strange is, if I shut my car off, and start it again in a few seconds, it will allow me to rev the full range, but only for a short while. It will then barely allow me to rev at all and eventually resume reving only to 3k.
The only mod on the car is a home fabricated-cut cold air intake. I took it out for now and replaced with the stock air box. Both vacum lines placed in correctly.
There has been a small oil leak for a long time and it has run fine with that small oil leak. After getting home from the trip I noticed some splashed (what i assume to be oil) along the hood of my car, along the sides, and even on the backs of my side mirrors.
Maybe the leak got worse? And I'm losing compression? I believe the leak is coming from the vtec controller, possibly the head-gasket.
I'm pretty stumped as to what to work towards for an answer, if you can help at all. Please phone in.
<u>**UPDATES**</u>
Replaced Fuel Filter.
Throwing code.
4 quick flashes, pauses then 9 quick flashes...
Code 4:CKP Sensor (Crankshaft Position Sensor)
defective circuit or unplugged / defective sensor
Code 9:CYP Sensor (Cylinder)
defective circuit or unplugged / defective sensor
* not a valid code for any throttle body injection Hondas
** not a valid code for V-6 engines
Compression Numbers
210 - 210 - 215 - 230
Pictures on Page 2 of Distributor that is voted as most likely thing wrong
<u>**SOLUTION!**</u>
Replace the distributor!
$173 from Distributor Kings on Ebay, Lifetime warranty I believe.
Dizzy has 3 sensors in it.
1. cylinder sensor : Code 9 that i threw...
2. crank angle sensor : Code 4 that i threw...
3. top dead center sensor

probably not. take the fuel filter off and blow through it. you should be able to blow through it VERY easily. if it take any kind of force, it's junk. I had that problem on both my crx and my nissian

If you didn't change anything then my first idea would be the igniter unit in the distributor.
Check that first, but replace the fuel filter if you've never done it, good maintenance item people ignore.

I will run down and get a new fuel filter tomorrow. Just to check, the fuel filter will be at the fuel pump in the rear of the car, or is it actually under the hood?

Too bad the problem is your Igniter Unit
And your B16's probably leaking at the VTEC Solenoid gasket, and maaaybe your Distributors O-ring.
The correct B16 VTEC solenoid gasket for a JDM PR3 is a NSX part #. --- 91 NSX. 15825-PR3-005

Re: I can't Rev past 3000rpm... ...grrrr (kevinoneill)
I just replaced the fuel filter and nada.
Funny story though, I managed to take the old one off, and then somehow, put it all the way back on before I realized the new one was just sitting there still...
I'll have to try the vtec solenoid gasket next. Honda Dealership was closed already today. So tomorrow morning I'll have to give it a try.

are u throwing any codes?
when throwing multiple codes the ecu goes into limp mode and wont let u rev higher than 3k

Re: I can't Rev past 3000rpm... ...grrrr (Suck my DX)
Funny you ask.
My engine light has been on long before this problem started, though upon checking for codes, it shows none. Still shows none.
I jump the wire with a paper clip, stick one end in each socket, turn the key to ACC and the light goes off, no flashing. I had discussed this previously in another thread, and it people seem to think its just a defective engine light.

are you still OBD0? if yes, don't jump the wire, look at the ECU to see if the red light is blinking.

Yes it is throwing a damn code!
4 quick flashes, pauses then 9 quick flashes...
Code 4:CKP Sensor (Crankshaft Position Sensor) CKP = crank position sensor
defective circuit or unplugged / defective sensor
Code 9:CYP Sensor (Cylinder) - CYP = cylinder sensor
defective circuit or unplugged / defective sensor
* not a valid code for any throttle body injection Hondas
** not a valid code for V-6 engines
Not really sure how to go about either of those.

Re: I can't Rev past 3000rpm... ...grrrr (mar778c)
Timing belt looks a little beaten up, but doesn't appear to have jumped a tooth. I'd need to replace it soon.
Is there a chance that maybe my headgasket has gone? I'm gonna do a compression test tom. evening.

Re: I can't Rev past 3000rpm... ...grrrr (mar778c)
I have had the same problem on my 88 Crx si and my 91 Dx. Won't rev past 3000rpm's and seems like i have a rev limiter but no CEL.
If it's thowing those codes for the distributor then pull off the Cap and check to be sure nothing has gotten chewed up. when i threw those codes on 2 different codes it turned out the coils inside the dizzy were eaten up by the sensors. I would cck that one.

Compression Numbers
210
210
215
230
Those are normal enough for me. I don't think compression is the problem.

did you check your ignitor like someone above mentioned, also the ecu blinks 1 flash to initialize, so dont count your 1st flash, just incase you didnt know...
i agree with whoever said ignitor

Re: (rolledthatho)
I'll be checking the dizzy tomorrow...
I let the ecu run threw its codes a few times. Is it only on the first run threw it will flash the initializing?
