How can I tell a Si transaxle from a DX by sight?
A local salvage yard here tells me they have a 5 speed transmision out of a CRX Si that I want. But I don't know if these guys are just trying to sell me a DX transmision. Is there a way to tell if it came out of a Si? Please help, I wana go fast... waaaaaa

the only difference in the si tranny and the dx tranny is the shaft (i can't remember what the hell it is called, but the rod, or shaft, or thing that comes out of the tranny that goes through the clutch and flywheel). the si has a larger shaft than the dx. if it is a dx tranny, your clutch will not fit - the hole will be too big for that shaft. other than that, they are pretty much identical looking.

actually no way of telling...the only time the clutch won't fit if its a 88 and the clutch is 89+ or vise a versa....all externally look the same...
JDM trannies are different since they use half shafts...

The 88-91 si tranny is called the L3-XXXXXX i think the numbers are just serial numbers the numbers are near the top of the tranny close to where the block numbers would be in the tranny was on a block. The 88 tranny has a different amount of spines on it and uses a smaller clutch, but I think it has slightly better ratios.

Re: How can I tell a Si transaxle from a DX by sight? (Mista Bone)
BOTTOM LINE: I would love to end up with a ZC trans in excellent condition.
I've been rackin my tiny brain trying to come up with a scenario that would let me do this with as little down time as possable as my CRX is my daily driver. When I started this thread I wuz thinkin I could transition from the Si trans back to the to the ZC trans after I finish rebuildin it, but have since found out the out-put shaft sizes for the two tranies are different (I thought the Si's had the larger axle size like the ZC's).
OBSERVATION: Both my DX trans and my ZC trans are labled as L3-XXXXXX on the ID stickers, and look identical to me (untrained eye), but are obviously different from a drivability standpoint. I would still love to know more bout how to ID these ...just in case I need this knowlage in the future.
BTW: This is my first Honda, I bought it 4 months ago and haven't had this much fun (for real) behind the wheel of a car since my 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner!

Re: How can I tell a Si transaxle from a DX by sight? (CRXtacy)
The only difference between the DX and the Si tranny is the final drive. The two transmissions are geared the same except for the final drive. As far as axles go I used the axles off of my 88 DX on my 90 Si tranny (ZC is different of course). I did see a thread somewhere about how to tell the difference. You may want to do a search, though I can't guarantee it was on this board.

eg6ajk - just fyi - the clutches are not transferable from dx to si or si to dx - i have seen both tranny's sitting next to each other on the floor and that was the only difference - they were both from 1990 crx's - you can't swap clutches - the splines for the clutch are larger than the dx - they won't fit.

BTW find out what the case casting numbers are, that is a real CLUE!
Hint, near the oil fill bolt.

Guys,
I would listen to Bone. He definitely knows SOHC motors and is the undisputed master of SOHC trannies. He has been around for quite a while and seems to find ways to make SOHC motors run well...really well.
Bone,
You still to on Hybrid? I have not been on there in quite a while...takes way too long to load.

crxplus they are not different, they do fit, any 90-5 clutch is interchangable...means 92 si will work in a 90 dx as well as 91 si or 90 cx....trust me on this one...
mista bone could you clarify this please...thanks

Re: How can I tell a Si transaxle from a DX by sight? (DOHC DX)
Why don't you go for an Lx tranny? Its final drive is between the Si and Dx. The difference in trannies relies on the year. 88-89 has 21 splines and 90-up has 20 splines on the input shaft. 88-91 1st-5th are the same except HF.
Hey Mista- what is the key to finding the year/model of trans from the case- I would LOVE to know. Worthless Honda techline could not help me- I have an Lx trans but I don't know the year. Its gotta be 88 or 89. I am swapping out my lx for an si soon- anyone got any extra zc gears laying around?

88 = 21 splines
89 = 20 splines

Got trannys?

Re: How can I tell a Si transaxle from a DX by sight? (Mista Bone)
I thinks there is a serial number break in 89 - when they switched from 21-20 splines, I could be mistaken. I have an unknown 88 or 89 lx in my rex now, I just got a 91 Si that I will be swapping gears into- I wanted the 4.25 final drive. How many megapixels is your camera? I want to get one soon- I was thinking I would like at least 2 megapixels. Then I can share more info as well. Opinions?

That pic was at 640x480 setting on a 1.3 megapixel camera.
It is a OLYMPUS D-370. I paid $199 at BestBuy.
VERY SIMPLE pic transfer. I can take a pic, transfer, put it on my websight, and post a link.......
all in under 2 minutes!
Also takes killer photos in total darkness...... http://home.cinci.rr.com/mistab0ne/Pics2/sleep2.jpg
