found alternator wire melting?

found alternator wire melting?
just did a test drive today and found the white large power wire burning and melting. the wire is right at the alternator.
why is it melting right there?
is it because the alternator is going bad or is it because something is grounding?
i was starting to think it was because of something in the car is grounding but nothing new is installed recently.
also if something is shorting in the car would the wire melt at the battery, being that the wires are all fused but at the battery and not directly at the alternator.
any help is appreciated.

I would have to guess that the alternator is bad or the voltage regulater inside maybe, causing it to put out too much voltage.
that is odd that its melting right there and not blowing a fuse
I would get it tested.

it was actually tested about a month or so back at kragen. they said its all good.
the loose wire theory might be possible. ill double check it.
yes it is weird no cell what so ever.
the things i did notice right before the melting is that the battery didnt seem to charge the battery all the time.
the interior light and gauge light did flicker when i hit the brake or when i taped the gas pedal.
the other thing also is that the radio wouldnt hold the memory it kept reseting. i thought it was some loose radio power wire.
the clock is still working with the right time. that didnt go out of wack. i did notice that once in the while the clock did seem to dim a bit. i think it would charge a bit once in a while. just not all the time.
so you all think its a bad alternator, since no fuse was blown?
