D16A8 made 102HP@WHEELS
hey Guys,
I just had my CRX Dynod on the weekend.
Its running a D16A8 Auspec motor, with Intake, RSR headers and Exhaust - and made 102HP@wheels (76kw)
There are plans for some Cams as well - but unsure on a profile yet, as I want to use the stock ECU and valvesprings - nothing too 'hardcore'.. I'll potentially be happy with about 115-120@wheels.
I can say that the RSRs made a bit of a diff as other JDM ZCs there made between 90-100HP with similar mods
What can you guys recommend for other not so expensive mods but fairly 'good' gains?
cheers
Mike

ZCs are 130, D16A8s are 126 at the flywheel or Engine HP. Given Drivetrain loss etc etc - they crank out about 80-90 wheel horsepower normally.

oh yeah - that wasn't stock without CAMS was it? had cams? otherwise i'd say the dyno reads higher than the one I just did ran my car on... there are variances.

D16A6 at Dyno Time (Currently R.I.P.)
- D16Y8 Intake Manifold (58mm TB matched)
- B18A1 Throttle Body (58mm)
- DC Sports D16Y8 4-1 Header
Beyond that it was internally stock for a 1989 motor, which was rated for 105hp / crank factory. 1990 PM6 though and this was on a Mustang Dyno (Tends to read a smidgen lower then Dynojets etc)

If you have a compotent machinit around you I'm sure they could open up your throttle body to 58-60 and make you a new butterfly for it, match that with the intake manifold and you should see a nice happy gain.

'not so expensive' - meaning come useful mods like your 'throttle body' advice. I can't unfortunatelly go out and spend $1000 or $2000 on a set of CAMS or a $5000 engine rebuild to make over 150@wheels. I wish I could bit I own 3 CRXs and to keep them all running, licensed and insured - thats probably a nice lot of $ that could get me power - so im working on a budget.
Im thinking Regrinds for CAMS. Any other Pros/Cons other than possible warpage, bad fit etc?

Id wanna keep the Head on the car until it needs to be removed for a rebuild of the rings, and bearings. Until then its more of the 'semi' bolton mods including cams.. even tho for cams i have to remove the cover and timing belt - its not as much as removing the head.

Keep in mind that the D16A6 was highly underrated by Honda.

If you have three CRXs, and I would hope they are all running, why not take one apart for the time being? Give you something to do for a weekend.

hi,
I think this needs to be clearead up....
first: how can your motor make 130@wheels while its making 137@crank? - Where is your DRIVETRAIN Loss.
2nd: How can a D16A8 with a compression ratio of 9.5:1 make more HP than a JDM ZC which has a compression ratio of 9.6:1?
No offence intended - but somewhere along the LINE between Japan and US there is a break and false information is being fed through. On some US websites all 3 motors D16A8/ZC and D16A9 are shown as making 137HP evenly... while the D16A8 is actually rates at 126HP - down 4HP from a JDM ZC - according to vatious Japanese websites AND some brochures I have at home.

One is being stored - thats the AF#29 from 1983 (29th CRX to come off the prod line in Japan). the 84 is licenses and running but needs new front end header panel, and the 91 (SINISTR) is my daily driver. So technically only 1 cars on the road atm hehe

Re: (SINISTR)
we dyno'd 3 stock d16a6 with various levels of IHE mods, and they all posted 108-112whp, using a dynojet.
yes, the Si was rated 105-108hp from the factory.
go figure.

of course its all varies on the dyno as well. i may have got 102 on this one but went to a different one I'll get 108 or 95HP - depends on the dyno calibration, temps etc.
its all good... Im not fussed hey, Im happy with the figure, cos as I said - I ran my car against ZCs with similar mods and made almost same HP.

Re: (SINISTR)
btw, single cam ZC and d16a6 were pretty much the same except for the slightly extra intake lift in the cam and the 4-2-1 exhaust manifold.
so slap a new header on, and the two engines should dyno pretty much equally. yet, the SZC is rated 118hp, and d16a6 is rated 108hp.
