Default D series tranny Questions...

I've got a D16Y8 in my 88 crx and am currently using the 88 Dx tranny...

1) If i buy a 91 Si tranny and 91 clutch kit will i need to change anything else? (axles, etc.)?

2) I also want to buy a 12lb flywheel (ACT Streetlite?), which should i buy it for...the 91 Si tranny or the 98 D16Y8 engine?

Thanks,
Vince

Get the clutch and flywheel for a 92-95 civic.. The trannys from 89-95 all have the same input shaft spline count of 20.. The 89 had a 200mm clutch and the 90-91 had a 212mm clutch.. The 92-95 has a 220mm clutch so get the flywheel for a 92-95 and clutch for the 92-95 and your set..

So the 92-95 clutch/flywheels are a little bigger and will be better than getting them for the 91 model? Sounds good thanks for the help.

...one more thing...when i do the tranny swap are there any other parts i will need besides the clutch/flywheel? I'm guessing the throw out bearing needs to be changed, where would i get one?

Hmm.. Well the clutch kit should come with a new throwout bearing.. Im just not sure if the 92-95 throwout bearing will work on a cable tranny since the 92-95 is a hydro.. If it doesnt work go and get one from a local parts store.. If your using 92 and up engine you need to use your drivers side motor mount from your 88-91 motor.. Other then that I think thats it.. Ohh.. You need to move your radiator fan switch.. Your old motor had it on the back of the block and the new motor has it at the thermostat housing.. Nothing big just extend the 2 wires and get the clip that goes on to the thermo switch and put it on to the extended wires..

i will tell you this from experience.

the 92-95 throwout bearing *WILL NOT* work in an 88-91 tranny.

the 92-95 clutch is the exact same size as the 90-91 clutch.

So i guess i may as well just get the 90-91 clutch kit so i wont have to get a new bearing... Thanks 91civicDXdude

Well what about this.. Using a 92-95 civic clutch with a 90-91 throwout bearing.. I just looked at the act clutch kits, the pressure plate and flywheel on the 90-91 crx and the 92-95 civic are the same part numbers, Just different throwout bearings.. Exedy doesnt make a stage 2 clutch for the 90-91 crx so im guessing a 92-95 exedy stage 2 with a 90-91 crx throwout bearing would work on a 90-91 crx tranny with a 92-up flywheel.. Any thoughts here..

Yeah i gotcha now...would you reccomend the exedy kit tgreaves? i was looking at ACT but i honestly don't know which is better, and which are comparable because ACT doesn't call them stage 1,2,3...

Thanks,
Vince

I know im going to get flamed for this but I like the exedy kit over the act kit.. I only use Exedy clutches or Clutchmaster clutches.. Is this for a street car or track car and what power are you putting out with it.. Thats what will tell you what clutch kit to buy..

it's a D16Y8 that will only see a max of 200hp (160whp?) after the build. It will be a daily driver but i want something that i can take to the track. Plus i like to drive fast daily Thanks for your help...i know pretty much nothing about tranny's/clutches...
