The very best thing you can do without a complete engine swap is to swap heads. The 8 valve configuration and the transmission is what is holding that engine back.
My honest advice, save your money for a swap. Do a tune up on your current engine and enjoy the fuel efficiency.

Oh don't worry about it, that's old. I got a job now. Don't worry about chipping or swapping ECUs until you decide on what engine you'll get. As for your transmission, any d-series DX or EX/Si transmission will work at the moment and be an upgrade (cable specific). But again if you'll swap later, might as well save your money.

This is what I went through on my 94 CX:

Mechanically speaking that is what you can expect. I don't know if the crank pulley applies to you and I'm not sure the fuel injectors apply either. Basically after you swap to a 16valve head (non VTEC 88-91 Si if possible) you should almost literally be able to plug in a PM6 ECU and go. It would be like a 1.5 Si given you have swapped transmissions.

I would never recommend chopping up an original HF as I love these cars and you're really not going to get much of an improvement as far as horsepower. But saying that, If you decide to do a swap I may be interested in your intake manifold, airbox, and some other pieces. Might help offset the cost of the new engine.
Looking forward to the pics!
