crx gas mileage-transmission
I have an '88 crx si, and the gas mileage sucks. I'm going to tune it up, get a new fuel filter, o2 sensor, ect. BUT i think the problem is that its just geared really low.
At 65mph I'm over 3,000 rpm, and I can't even get the clutch out of 1st gear before I'm ready to shift to 2nd (I like to keep the rpm's not too high). My transaxle has a lot of miles on it so I was thinking of replacing it sometime soon, and I was wondering if anyone whos driven an HF knows if an HF transaxle will just have way too slow of acceleration for a lot of stop and go. The DX just has a slightly different final drive ratio, but does anyone know if a dx tranni would significanly get me better gas mileage? Does anyone own a dx or hf?

What kind of mileage are you getting? With my stock CRX Si, I was getting ~40mpg overall, close to 45mpg on the highway. I don't think changing the transmission will have as much of an effect as you'd like, I would look into a tuneup and all that good stuff.

I agree 100% with these guys.. my super short geared zc/si hybrid tranny got 37mpg on the highway with the A/C on (this is in a 91 hatch, the portliest of them all).
Tune it up (possibly a compression test while you are at it) - check the tire pressure - make sure your brakes aren't dragging - and check the alignment.

I'm at around 30mpg...and thats driving conservatively without a/c. It seems like it would do worse with highway miles since it rides over 3200 rpm's at 60-70 mph.
How hard/expensive is a compression check? Also, the previous owner had installed a new muffler for emissions, so should I look into getting a certain muffler? Any other engine-related things I could check into when doing the tuneup?

I've got an hf and I was getting about 42 mpg highway, but the damn thing is PATHETIC off the line. I never even used 5th gear that much. Granted the engine needed a rebuild, but my dx made so much more power....
It seems to be a tossup. More power or more economy... take your pick.

Even with a quick car though, it's still a Honda. I have a B18C5 in mine, and around the city driving "enthusiastically" I get 28-30, on the highway I get 34ish. Then I go to VIR and get 18mpg on track.
That's what makes V-ATTAK so great, you get the best of both worlds.

When my A/C compressor was broken, I got 40 mpg from Columbia to Atlanta with the A/C off and the windows open in my 91 Si. Probably averaged about 70 - 75 mph. Even at high RPM you should be able to get good mileage. Tune it up.
Single cams get the best MPG between 3200-3600 rpm for sustained cruise.
I would do a tune including the O2 as its job is to monitor long term fuel trim.
To answer your question yes the DX 3.83 final drive to the Si 4.25 would get better gas mileage.

to those of you who said you got over 40 mpg (drdisco69, d357r0y, Lucy 89 HF, MattP), did you have stock exhaust?
The previous owner of mine put on an aftermarket muffler for emissions and its got to be one of the quietest things I've ever heard.
