Bought a 1990 EF standard. Having trouble diagnosing why it doesn't run.
So this is my first post. A friend bought an EF about 6 months back. He left the guys house and got gas when he left the gas station it died on him mod drive. He tried for a couple days to figure it out but couldn't get it to crank again. So he gave up. I bought it for 200$ USD as is thinking that I could figure it out. Turns out the person he bought it from had a killswitch on the starter, the battery not strapped in. He had a rat's nest of wires connected to the dash. A switch for each blinker, a fan switch and a killswitch. I got rid of all the rats nest in hopes to figure out power. I checked the fuses. And found the battery positive was tore up so I fixed it and got power. I tried to pop start but to no avail. I removed the starter and tested it and it was super dead so I replaced that. Still no crank. Checked the clutch safety switch and the plug was missing so I but a bolt in. Now I hear my relays clicking at least when I turn the key but still no crank. While the starter was out I put it in 5th gear and rocked it back and forth and say movement in the hole so as far as I know that means the engine isn't frozen? I'm stumped at what it could be. I even crossed the starter posts to see if I could crank it that way and got nothing. Any suggestions from here? Kinda leaning towards it being a bad relay or ignition switch at this point.

Could try turning the crank with a 19mm socket and ratchet, that could rule out frozen engine.

Are getting a signal on your starter? More likely to be electrical than mechanical.
