the A6 would be the most straight forward. do a google search for single cam honda forums. you'll find much more info and support there.

D16a6 is where its at. grab a d16z6 intake then port match for a b16 tb the basic bolt ons with chipped ecu and light flywheel and u got a quick lil ****er. Thats my setup, i had the d15b2 mpfi and found a a6 longblock with rebuilt head and its a fun car to drive. Not quite b16 fast but it moves.

Honestly, an A6 is the easist. Do a z6 intake manifold, and run the Z6 throttle body. A b16 TB is too much on a stock sohc, it may feel more responsive, but nit faster. Anywho, with an A6, you wont have to convert to obd1. If you already are, or plan to, probably just drop in a d16z6 (sohc vtec) and be done.

why a y8 head???????
and bro i got a d15bvtec (jdm) motor is the best single cam out there better than z6 n y8 i owned both a z6 n y8 so i know what they could do the only good thing about having a z6 is that you could put pm9 (jdm zc dohc) pistons and have a high comp ratio but anyways back to the jdm d15b vtec i have it its been a great motor i taken alot of friends for rides in my ef they say its beastly for a sohc n all i have is headers sk2 intake many with b20 throttle body and aem short ram and it pulls nicely i taken out ls with this motor

Re: best single cam engine in a 91 hatch
Z6 block has better oiling and the Y8 head has better quench (better factory bowls) with the intake being more refined to the torque curve. This is assuming you want to either build it up or use cheaper used factory parts. Otherwise go stock D16Z6 - bit if you want to stay OBD-0 then hard to say... because pretty much all OBD-0 SOHC's suck. I would go JDM D15 or D16A6.
Also I am sure your D15 feels peppy, but if you put a stock Y8 in a EF it would walk a D15... The only way you are beating LS's is with shitty drivers or the actual vehicle (decent weight difference).

Re: best single cam engine in a 91 hatch
All great points. I am in the same boat. Mine is a '90 hatch with a d15 and dpfi. Would I need to convert to mpfi to reap the benefits of throwing a y8 on there?

Re: best single cam engine in a 91 hatch
I hear that the mini me (d16a6 block with d16z6 head) was one of the better swaps. That's just what I collected from the FAQ. I'm personally goin with the d16y8 head and d16y7 block. Only because I'm getting it for cheap and I am getting it off a friend. Have not really heard much about the power aspect of it. But anything is a step up from dual point

Re: best single cam engine in a 91 hatch
TonyLove - it's all fun and games to me. Either way I just checked eGay and the cheapest JDM 92-95 D15 was still $1k - and you are stuck with whatever transmission you have. At that point your are better off going B-swap. Hey, if you are happy with it then good for you - I don't play with D-series any ways, at least not any more.
P.S. I have always said, "The Haterade is there for you to drink, not me!"

Re: best single cam engine in a 91 hatch
I have a z6 swap in my sedan and an SI trans. I race near every weekend and I do beat LS Integra's on the regular. Doesnt surprise me at all that a D15b would do the same, especially in a lighter hatch.
it depends if you want to go OBD1 or not. If you dont, I would say a d16a1/dohc zc. that way its DOHC (~130hp) but you dont have to swap mounts and you can keep your d-series trans.
if you do go OBD1 (i would, and did) I would say a D16z6 with a y8 intake mani, hondata intake gasket, and a b-series TB (port matched of coarse. I have done all this to my car other than the y8 mani and its pretty quick. My I/H/E integra GSR still beats it, but like I said, it can beat LS's all day long.

Re: best single cam engine in a 91 hatch
The best thing you can do is add an Si trans. Honestly, you can keep your mpfi b2, go with a Z6 intake and TB, an A6 cam and the right cam gear (search, I don't remember) and make good power. As for b series TB on stock d-series, I still stand by they're too big. If Honda put a 58-60mm on a 160hp, 8k rpm motor, don't you think its a bit much for a 130 HP, 7k rpm engine? Its not all about volume, velocity is key as well. This is another reason I like the stock Z6 IM, plus i've heard of the Y8 causong either the #1 or 4 cylinder to be a bit leaner than the rest.
I had a stock A6 block with a stock Z6 head for a while and it was pretty peppy. In the 1000ft in the same car, my friends stock D16A6 with same I/H would just edge me out due to better low end. 1/4 I would be a bit faster.
Now, the same setup with a Crower level 2 cam, edlebrock IM and a crome tune by myself has me beating most bolt-on to lightly modded b swapped cars. Only ran across one nicely done 88 dx hatch that got me in 3rd gear with about the same mods as me.

Re: best single cam engine in a 91 hatch
I never understood that logic. I mean, If honda puts 1.5" pipe on the car from the factory, that should be plenty, right?
I put a 60 MM TB and port matched my Z6 in my car and I felt a good increase in power all the way through.
