b17 buildup or ls/vtec
i am currently running a b16a in my crx with CTR pistons and CTR cams and was wondering if i should build an ls/vtec since i have a b18a block sitting around, or should i go with a b17 and build that up? I am looking for more torque and a little more hp. I know that using the ls block with a b16a head with ITR pistons will yeild me more hp and torque, but was wondering if there was any advantages ( like revving to high rpm's ) with the b17 block since i know they run a lower compression ratio than that of any other vtec engine....
I have the option of running the same head and cams on top of a built ls block ( eagle rods, USDM ITR pistons, ACL bearings, with gsr oil pump) or should i somehow put them parts minus the rods into a b17 and have a strong high revving NA motor??
So my question basically is what would you all do and what would be the best as far as more torque ( compared to b16a ) and still have a good r/s ratio.....??

Re: b17 buildup or ls/vtec (90crxzcgasd)
If you want more horsepower and definatly more torque, go with the LS/VTEC swap. Its not really that hard to pull off if you have the motor, B16 head, and the right **** to do it. WHATEVER-YOU-DO!!!!!!!!!!!! do not swap for a B17, It would basically be like putting the same motor in your car ( B17 is rated @ 160hp and 113 ftlbs of torque) unless if there is some powerful B17 out there? The only B17s are from 92-93 acura integra gs-rs. I've also heard that the LS/VTEC swap will produce MORE power than a GS-R powerplant because of the B16 head. So if I was in your shoes man, I'd go with the LS/VTEC swap because you have the bottom end and the experience to do it and it will definatly give you way more torque than a B17. Myself, having a 92' LS have been thinking of doing the same swap using my bottom end w/ a 1999 civic Si head. But this combination would definetly suit the Crx's light weight chassis. With the light weight in mind w/ good torque ratings, and a few modifications added= a fast, fast, naturally-aspirated car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Sometimes you have to try this when you are not sure. take the horsepower and divid it into the weight making a power-to-weight ratio.
example, crx's usually weigh about 2000 lbs and a B16 has 160 hp.
2000/160=12.5 ratio 12.5:1
my integra (sad but true) weighs 2500 lbs and has about 165 hp.
2500/165= 15.1 ratio 15.1:1
so, if you put a 200 hp LS/VTEC swap in a CRX the ratio would be:
2000/200= 10 ratio 10:1
I'm not sure if it work the same way with the torque ratings or not, but it still is cool to mathmatically caculate how fast cars are without having to race them.
