okay i have a 91 hatchback si with rear drum brakes and my emergency brake does not work it barley worked so thats why i changed the drums shoes and hardware kit and still nothing no leaking or anything so i replaced both the brake cables and still nothing iam getting pissed i hate drum brakes but i need help i need my E brake!

what about the self adjuster? did you tighten it up?

everything was tightend and placed right iam gonna buy a wheel cylinder rebuild kit today and replace that and look over everything again but as far as i know everything is correct .

remove you center ebrake cover thingy.

there is a 12mm nut with one cable going to the ebrake handle and a bracket with 2 cables on the other side of it.

tighten that up and see if it gets better. if not you should stick your head under your car and inspec the ebrake cables to make sure that htey are not severed and that they are mounted to the chassis correctly.

i know all of that i replaced both cables and tightend everything and what not no kinks in cables nothing so its not the cables.

well at eh end of the cable inside the drum is it attached to the shoe correctly?

And you're POSITIVE you adjusted the adjuster in the drum? ....IE the little star thingy

With the drums off pull on the e-brake does the parking brake arm on shoes move?

It's the cylinder's in your drums, same thing happened to me, you just need to replace them and probably get new drums (the casing) as well. I did that and mine are good to go.

When using the e-brake, doesn't it not use the wheel cylinders? Isn't the brake held purely on cable tension and not rely on any hydraulics? How could replacing the wheel cylinders or doing anything with the hydraulic system affect the e-brake?

^ ^ ^ ^ dude you have to ask questions and when answers to the question dont make sence then ask questions about the answer or you'll get nowhere fast...id recommend going back and do a run thrue on what you did make sure tension springs are on correctly, cotter pins...etc....or you can save ur self the trouble and buy the rear disc conversion i got for sale in the garage! (he he shameless sales pitch) anyway good luck on the fix.....

Not very cost or time affective, but wouldn't hurt. Didn't 91 Si's have rear discs anyways?

yeah, wheel cylinders are for the hydraulic setup, nothing to do with the e-brake at all. Its pretty simple, you just need to find the problem... If the shoes aren't moving at all when you pull the ebrake, then the cables are either the wrong ones (considering you don't have the drums on an Si), or they are improperly adjusted, or not installed right.

i always thought Si's were rear disc equiped untill i noticed that my brother's and 3 other friends SI's were drum...im the only hatch (dx) w/ disc in the bunch due to conversion but im yet to see a stock si on disc's.....
