In your vehicle do you use the passive seatbelts how they were designed (leaving them buckled at all times, never disconnecting them), or just as regular pillar-mounted belts (fastening them after entering the vehicle)?

Passive seatbelts is the name given to door-mounted seatbelts.

My 88 crx has the seatbelts on the pillars, or whatever it's called.

THE PASSIVE SYSTEM GETS A BIG WTF!!!! To this day I have no idea how this system is supposed to work and be "better." I like all the changes for 90-91's, but i hate the heavy *** doors and weirdo seatbelts, i unlatch everytime. and i have to keep the passenger seatbelt buckled to prevent the annoying light on the ceiling.
I think honda was a little to proud of their new "passive" restraint system when it came out. They made a beeper, a big shift-light-like warning light on the ceiling, plus the gauge cluster seatbelt light. WTF

Yeah on the late Rex's you have to unbolt-ever tried getting in with those?.That's why I was asking what he had.
BUT they have problems at times too,lol.The cars are getting old and can act funny sometimes.Mine(91crx)everyonce in a while will act up and start beeping,no steady reason yet.

How they work is, that you have to keep the seat belt buckled up the whole time and just slide in and out of the car without unbuckling the seat belt

But you still have to manually buckle the lap belt, don't you?

It's been so long since I've owned a 90/91 hatch I've forgotten exactly what they're like.

around 15 years ago, the US federal government began mandating "passive restraint" systems in cars. given that motorised seatbelts were quite a bit less expensive to engineer, install and manufacture than SRS airbags, most manufacturers went with the cheaper option. as airbag costs came down, they became more and more common. eventually, airbags became mandatory. and auto seatbelts went away.

Are you sure some of you guys aren't confusing the auto seatbelts in the '90/91 Sedan with the 90/91 style hatch seatbelts?

what "lap belt" are you talking about? The CRX's dont have that. I understand how those motorized automatic seatbelts work like in the early 90s tegs. My parents had an accord like that. The CRX ones are just attached to the door. I dont see any way to keep it buckled and "slide in" under the belts without looking completely ridiculous and getting all tangled up

OK people,This only works for the Civic/Crx with the pillar mount (top)belt that auto works when the door opens/closes.That is what passive means-something that you have no Active control over-unless you unbuckle the belt off it it of course.
Call your local Honda dealership if their is problems with the belt system,they will help-under warranty,that's right-check it out.I know are cars are old-they think safety first-I've seen many fixed.

"passive seatbelts" is indeed the intent of the post 88 seatbelt changeover. after 88, the government regulated that a certain percentage of cars made by each manufacturer have installed SOME sort of "passive restraint". only the upper scale cars at the time had air bags installed, which before the 100% driver side airbag rule came into effect, manufacturers would use the airbag feature as an extra "luxury" selling point, "safety at a cost" marketing. it also filtered down that the "sliding" shoulder belt was a step above the door mounted belts, which is why the integras had that type installed. so the 89-91 crx's were designed with the door mounted seatbelt retro-fit and have the seatbelt permanently clicked in, which is why theres that big red warning label next to each buckle on the ebrake cover. this requires the driver/passenger to slide in between the belts with the door open, as if there was no extra hassle of clicking the buckle everytime. of course, only very few ppl know this and even fewer care. but honda can at least say they installed a passive restraint system, whether or not anyone used it. once mandatory driver side airbags came into effect, all other forms of passive restraint systems were pretty much dropped. (even tho its clearly researched that the effectiveness of airbags drops significantly without the use of seat belts, more unthinking regulatory nonsense)

its unfortunate the design of the US crx had to be mutilated to satisfy the unthinking, political, US regulatory system. but thats the story, and thats why canadian crx's dont have the door mounted belts either. my only real complaint about the retro-fitted door mounted belts is the extra weight of the seat belts creates a much larger moment on the door hinges, which causes most door hinge stopper/spring to crack and separate, causing that loud CLANG...

but actually, having just bought a 88 and getting used to the older design, i find the newer design a bit more safe since theres TWO retractors, isntead of one. when i buckle the 88 style one in, i always make sure to give the shoulder strap a tug to make the lap belt more snug, otherwise, theres too much slack in the lap belt. should the seat belt lock and my body moves forward, there would be too much slack in the lap belt that the shoulder belt allows to move forward too much and easily alloy my head to slap into the wheel. ive gotten used to tugging the shoulder belt everytime tho. and the door mounted belts do make it a bit easier to reach the seat belt also. with the 88, you gotta reach "under" to grab the seat belt, as opposed to "over" the shoulder as normal. just another thing to get used to.

ive tried to get in and out without unbuckling the belts....its like a fly in a spider web. you get caught in the belts and cant get out.

my friend just recently sold his 89 crx to his friend, and his friend was running fromt the cops at the local street races and ended up hitting a telephone pole and destroying the crx. anyways my friend went and checked out the crx and the door was peeled inward from the impact @ around 90mphish and i guess the stock steering wheels are supposed to snap on impact well he had an aftermarket steeringwheel and it bent around the steering column. ill have to ask him for pics, but that seat belt thing is scary.
last i heard the guy was in critical condition, possibly loosing a legs, broke both his arms i believe and i beleive some brain damage.

Mine broke . It became unrolled and would not roll back in so I cut it out and put in a 4-point harness.

If your stock seatbelts wont retract or the buckle breaks or anything, you can take it into the dealer and they'll replace it all for free.

I realize that its kinda late now that you cut it out but just for reference.

That would have been nice to know about three years ago.
