Default *garage find* 89 civic hatch

hey everybody. well long story short.. i sold my 89 hf crx with 89 si motor and trans swap. i needed more seat for my son. traded it for a fullsize chevy truck. well it got tboned so i gave to my dad to sell so he could pay bills around the house (his wife/my step mom deathly sick)

ok well now caught up to speed. my uncle broke a ring in his motor 10 yrs ago. he pulled the motor out and fully rebuilt it. he fully cleaned the motor and bored it .10 over. well then he just stopped. the motor/trans and the car sat in the garage and they just started packin stuff in the car, on the car and around the car and it sat for 10 yrs.

i have now got something like 50+ hrs in cleaning out and organizing the garage & tools to where i could work car the car quite well. its just a base model 89 civic hatch with a d15b1 motor (yes i now how wimpy they are but its a fully stock rebuilt motor with no miles and yes sadly has the 4 speed- i plan on swtichin to 89 the whole d16a6 top of the motor. the head/cam gear, intake and mpfi conversion) but anyway im on the part of goin threw what all parts are on the shelves and cleaning all the bolts/brackets ect.

any ideas on how to clean all these parts well. i got a plastic tub to set parts in and just scrub with a sos pad with brake cleaner and simple green. also ideas on how to clean stuff like the greasy alternator? then in next few days imma roll the hatch outside and give the car a good washing. then i plan on scrubbing the the engine bay. i want it to look squeaky clean like everything else before i start dropping the motor in. im goin to put pics up so everybody can the project and any good legit advice is much needed and aprecatied

Get some degreaser. Order it online at like amazon if you want to save a couple bucks. Or go to walmart and get generic stuff. It works wonders. That and if you can get a heated pressure washer, those are the bomb. A regular pressure washer will work too. Just pray it down with the pressure washer and then hit it with the degreaser. Done.

Not a clue. Only seen one. But then again, I've never looked for one.

That was like $200 for the day. Pricy for sure. I'd just borrow someones regular pressure washer and get degreaser.

Here's another site, cheaper but I don't know how trust worthy either of these are. Check your local hardware store or tool rental location if you are seriously interested.

For an install guide, just google 89 civic service manual and get one free online. It will cover every thing you need. Also, I agree with a mini-me swap!

well i have the haynes manual & the chilton manual for it. but it doesnt help me to much wit a bucket of bolts lol.

then will i really gain that much from doin the zc or y8 *mini me swap*?
also i would have to do quite a bit of wiring then to make vtec vs just puttin in a single cam and better flowing head and intake.
witch yes doin my mpfi conversion i would be swapin head & intake anyway. but doin just the mpfi i have to do more wiring **** than id like.

the a6 head is the exact same casting as the d15. as for wiring, no you'd be adding two more wires to activate vtec since you're doing an mpfi swap either way. the rest can be all done with jumper harness's.

Yes. I was about to suggest something very complicated, but a mini me is a good place to start. 110~115 to the wheels if you get lucky. That vs 55 or so from the B1 haha.

o ok cool they make jumper wires for us guys that dont wanna do any wiring.. nice lol
well to update the project im in the middle of tryin to pull the car outside so i can wash 10 yrs of dirt n dust off and clean the engine bay. thinkin about puttin the axles back in so i can put the wheels on it and push the car in and out of the garage. read that if the axles arent back in hub before its back on its own weight n pushin n pullin it i can hurt the bearings ....

Not saying this isn't true, but I don't understand why it would hurt the bearings. The axles don't hold any sort of load. They are CV axles. You can pull them apart. If you have the upper and lower control arms plus the steering rack attached, I see no reason you can't move the car under it's own weight.

^ The axle nut pulls the bearings together (they are split inner race). Without the axles the inner races can separate and you will have tons of slop in the hub and you can potentially damage the bearings.

Also, even with a jumper harness, there is still wiring to do. You need to convert from DPFI to MPFI, which is like 6 wires that need to be run. Going Vtec is another 1-3 wires, depending on how you do it.

Did not know that.

But the wiring is super easy. Everyone, including me, over think it until they do it.

well im pretty much done cleaning up the engine bay and most of the parts. have some parts scuffed and sanded ready for paint. imma get rustoleum flat black and semi gloss black but on a few things i was tryin to decide to keep this or that red or paint black cuz its got scuffed or scrapped but that depends on if i can find some red in can of spray paint thats close enough for me to touch up the engine bay. i dont want to black out most of the engine bay but i dont want to see bear metal for w.e. reason its showing. anyone have any info on gettin Rio Red Clearcoat R-63-4 in spray can? i say some kits of touch up from touchup.com and saw i could get some from amazon. id prefer to go in a store and get it tho. any suggestions guys?
ill post progress of the car if wanted....

Wish I knew this! I would have gone a completely different color on my car. I had to find a color that I could match the door jams with a rattle can color.
