You will need to have the computer checked with an OBD-II scan tool. If DTC P2646 or P2647 is set, replace the VTEC oil pressure switch. If DTC P1259 is set and the oil level was okay, replace the entire VTEC spool valve. If DTC P1259 is set and the oil level was low, top off the oil and reset the computer, then drive the car to see if the problem reoccurs.

If by chance you get a DTC P1009, then you've got a more major problem related to the VTC actuator and/or timing chain.
I have this same sputtering and / or dying problem (exactly at 2,900 RPM), CEL code started with P2646 and switched to P1009 after an initial dealer diagnosis. My 2005 Element has 224,000 miles on it so ... the dealer tech ultimately "timing chain." I said, wow, time to win the lottery. I'm unemployed right now and fairly broke ... but this issue has to get fixed. But i have a few questions if someone could help before i get started?
  • If the timing chain was stretched, wouldn't that make my car sputter AT ANY RPM? (if not, why not?) Or ...
  • If the VTC Actuator is the problem, is there a typical failure and / or repair that is advised? And lastly ...
  • Is there any way to know whether the problem is one (stretched chain) or the other (VTC Actuator) so i don't have to buy parts / do work that isn't necessary?

In advance, thank you very much! julie.

I solved this problem ... adding 2/3 bottle of transmission fluid to the crank case. $3.83 plus tax (the dealer wanted to replace VTEC, VTC, timing chain, tensioner and guides, more than $1,500!).
