overflow boiling over
we are on our honeymoon in gatlinburg TN. we are driving my wife's 97 CRV and when we are cruising around town it is fine, until i stop, then it gets a little hot until i start moving again. then when i get back to the cabin there is antifreeze boiling out of the overflow. my guess is that the fan is not kicking on. would that be correct, i have all of my tools with me, so what all do i need to check, i do have my voltmeter with me, so how could i check the relays for the fans? it just started doing this today, we drove down here sunday, which was about 6 hours, and have been driving around town all week.
i might be the fan....turn your AC on full blast...2 of the fans should be running...if not theres something wrong...
take the plug off the fan and hot wire it to the battery...to make sure the fans are still working...if not then you know the problem...if the thermostat is stuck then it shouldnt matter if youre running or on park...itll overheat...
start there

Drive the car around and get it up to operating temp. Park it and pop the hood. Watch the fans. Not sure about the CVR, but at least one of them should cycle on and off. If the temp gauge starts to climb and the fan doesn't come on, you've got an issue obviously.
Check the fuse for the fan. Never dealt with a CRV, but in a civic it's a 20A fuse in the under hood fuse box.
If that's good, locate the thermostat housing. You'll have a sensor on there with a plug attached to it. That's your fan cycle switch. Disconnect that plug and take a paperclip or a piece of wire and jump the connectors in the connector. Your fan should come on. If it does, replace that fan cycle switch, after you run power from the battery to the fan motor and ruled out a bad motor.
If the motor is good, switch the radiator fan relay with the one for your AC clutch (if your AC works fine) or another relay in that same fuse box and repeat the jumping out trick. If it comes on with a different relay, replace the bad one.
These are all things you can do without a meter. Anything beyond those tests I mentioned will require you digging a bit deeper.

seeing as how all of my jumper wires are in my car at home, i ohmed the motor... and nothing, turned the car on and set the a/c on full blast and checked for power to the fan motor, and got 12v. so the motor is shot. now to try and find one decently priced on the way home.
Don't know. I looked on majestic's website to compare part numbers. Don't know what year CRV you have, so I went with a 2000 EX.
They look similar on the drawings, but part numbers are way different. I'd say take your shot one out and go to a junk yard. Your biggest issue (if you want a plug 'n' play solution) is to find one with the same plug on it.
Good luck with that.
