Honda Element: Prioritizing what to fix from a multitude of problems
Hi everyone,
I have a 2005 Honda Element EX(158,000 miles) and I just got an oil change today. The multi-point inspection revealed a handful of problems which apparently require "immediate attention". I'm not very well versed in car repairing but would you all help me figure out what requires my immediate attention and what may be dealership fluff? Also, which repairs are MOST needed?
Here is what they found:
- The steering rack is leaking from the end seals
- The VTEC spool valve filter needs replacing
- Front lower control arm compliance bushing had an issue (torn maybe)
- all coolant hoses need to be replaced (age)
- thermostat needs to be replaced (age)
- there is also a small oil leak near the VTEC solenoid
- the condenser fan needs to be replaced or is non operating correctly.
I know that is a lot but in all, this is looking like 5k worth of repairs at the dealership. I would love any advice. Thank you!

Re: Honda Element: Prioritizing what to fix from a multitude of problems
Order in which I think they should be done.
1/ Front lower control arm compliance bushing – can cause problems with steering and tyre wear.
2/ Steering rack leaking end seals - as above can cause problems with steering and tyre wear.
3/ coolant hoses – If you don’t have any overheating or coolant leaks I would leave these until last.
4/ thermostat change due to age – thermostat ether works or it doesn’t.
5/ Leak near VTEC solenoid – Need to confirm if it’s the solenoid seal leaking. If yes I would suggest you change the strainer filter at the same time.
6/ Condenser fan not operating correctly – Need to diagnose the issue, but suggest you leave until last.
