CKP Pattern Clear/CKP Pattern Learn Procedure Help
Hey guys,
So finally finished with my complete overhaul of my element.
At 250k miles the head needed new exhaust valves.
Also done...
All put together and I have a hang-up.
The manual instructs me to Clear the CKP Pattern and learn it.
I have done the LEARN pattern by running the engine at 3000k ect in the past to resolve an idle issue.
But I never CLEARED the pattern using a scan tool.
I have a (15 Year old) mt2500 Snap-On old school scan tool. Not sure if this will clear the pattern but based on what I have seen of the tool it doubtful.
I hate to have to buy an expensive scan-tool because my snap-on tool has always read the codes and worked for what I use it for.
Can anyone give me some info?
Any help would be appreciated

Also done...
- replaced the water pump
- oil pan gasket replace
- new timing chain
- new timing belt
- new ball joints since the sub-frame was off to replace the oil pan gasket
- anything else that I saw that needed attention or was recommended to replace with the head removal
All put together and I have a hang-up.

- Is it safe to go straight to the learn without clearing?

- what are my cheap alternatives to clearing this pattern.
- can I rent the tool from O'reily's or other
Any help would be appreciated

Well as expected my Snap-On mt2500 scan tool doesn't have the "Adjustment Menu" where I can clear the CKP pattern.
Any help would be great so I can get my baby back on the road.

HDS use three different kinds of clear commands: DTC CLEAR, ECM/PCM RESET, and CKP PATTERN CLEAR.
Using the HDS in Generic OBD II mode or a generic scan tool, there’s just one clear command. It clears all learned values.
With your Snap-on MT2500, if you go to the Main Menu, then Functional Tests, and Reset Tests; that should clear all learned values; including the CKP Pattern Clear.

Thank you so much for your response.
Here is what my mt2500 says...
Cartridge is Global OBD II / EOBD
I tried all from the menu and see no Reset option...maybe missing something?

- Start Communication
- Readiness Test Status
- MI Status
- Display Currant Data
- Display Freeze Frame
- Display Trouble Codes
- Clear Emissions Related Data
- Display Test Parameters / Results
- Request Control of On-Board System
- It runs the Evap System Leak Test and just goes on and on
?
This link is the instructions for the MT2500, under Scanner Operations.

Well it looks like my cartridge must be to old (2003) because it isn't giving me any of the options on the main menu that snap-on shows available. I do show those options when connecting to my chevy but I also have additional cartridge for that for GM's.
I have a 2003 Global OBD-II / EOBD Vehicle Communication software cartridge.
When looking the last time I found nothing that was specific for asian vehicles that was dated 2005 or higher available.
When looking on ebay I fine the same cartridge but 2009 available. here
Is this what you have or am I missing a cartridge?
Any other way to clear this CKP pattern? Starting to feel the pain of doing all that work only that have this stupid hang-up in getting the car started.

Are you saying when I clear the emissions codes it will also clear the CKP pattern and I can go on to the learn process?
Also, since you stated it "should" clear the CKP pattern. What if it doesn't? Should I recognize an issue that would cause concern or will the engine just run rough.

@tech8
I have one last question. I took a lot of stuff off so would hate to have to tear stuff apart because I made a mistake now.
So based on what I have read and can tell clearing the emissions data should clear the CKP. Lets assume it does and the engine is running. Can I let the engine run at idle to make sure I didn't miss a hose or connector.
Is there an immediate urgency to do the learn process? Can I let the car run at idle for a while I inspect the hoses and such.
Sorry for the noob questions but never did this on any of my cars.

So I'm not sure if this will help but I have a similar problem with my 08 Honda Accord 2.4 liter I recently changed the starter back in August and the car seemed to be doing fine well I put the car up for sale and after sitting for 2 weeks the battery died so I jump the battery off and drove it and it seemed to be doing fine then the next day they started throwing codes for the crank sensor cam sensor misfire on cylinders 2 & 3 so I have replaced both sensors after replacing one failing replacing the other it didn't work so then we do the computer relearn it Those sensors it was still doing it so after every other possible reason all the forums replacing the battery replacing the sensors again thinking they were faulty sensors I called Honda the Honda guy immediately knew exactly what was wrong I told him about this codes that were throwing only about the crank sensor and cam codes it was throwing and he said and it's throwing the misfire on 2 and 3 cylinder and I said yes he said do you have an aftermarket starter and I said yes he said that is the problem granted the starter was $454 I had to pay for it because I am trying to sell the car I'm going to get the money back out of it so I wasn't so much worried about it after replacing the starter relearning the computer doing a whole crank pattern relearn it still was not working correctly it run fine I shut it off and when I go back to crank it up it was throwing those codes again so I called Honda back and told him hey you know I bought this because you told me I needed it and that's $450 pissed away and I'm out of money so he said in order for it to be a total relearn it has to be like almost reset the Entire Computer in the car by the car has to think that it's a new computer for that car cause even just relearn it and clearing those codes that computer remembers those and it's going to misfire the issue was as the aftermarket starters sends a signal to the crank sensor and cam sensor and some how there's an interruption with it and it misfires and does all the other stuff the starters the after Market starters the specs are not up-to-date with a 2008 starter I'm not sure what other years that would include as far as the Hondas but the Honda guy told me this exact time he said he's had to change about eight hundred of them for that specific reason and that they keep this this exact starter in stock because it's so often that happens although starters for Hondas rarely go out they do eventually it being nearly 10 years old things are expected to happen hope this helps someone maybe it can kill you a lot of time I did read it forum about it on a bulletin that was posted before and we just assume that the starter was the least likely culprit and was not logical so we looked over it and decided that was you know not the not the culprit for it but in the end it definitely was hope it helps someone
