2006 ABS / VSA misbehaves - disable?
Only real problem is the insanely stupid ABS / VSA system, which comes on and off whenever it feels like. I know many out there like their safety devices - I object to them. Especially when they do not allow me to turn them completely off. This is the beginning of the war against Artificial Intelligence. I have tried to disable it via fuses, which causes the entire electrical system to shut down - including emergency blinkers! And once I pulled over in rush hour traffic on the interstate, no flashers, and it was locked in PARK ! How stupid is that? I replaced the 50amp fuse (the one with 2 philips screws) while on side of the road - and Halleluja it worked again. Now it's just super-annoying because when it comes on, I have to pull over, shut/start car again and go. Anyone else had this problem? I don't want to hear about the "go to the dealer" solution. This problem is not worth $1100 to me. I should be able to disable the system. I will forge ahead and eventually find out. Otherwise, a beautiful, dark gray, no rust EX car and everything else works.

You could just diagnose and fix the issue. Not easy I know, but as you've discovered the sub-system is integrated in such a way that you'd need to reprogram the ECU and possibly replace some components to eliminate it.

Ugh. I know you are right. It just makes me crazy is all. Thought there might be an easier/cheaper answer out there. Thanks. K.

I wonder if you could use a 2002-2004 ECU? Then delete the ABS pump and run 2002-2004 brake lines... definitely not easier, but perhaps cheaper if you did the work yourself.

My other thought: Can I take the sensors out, clean them, and re-install? I'm guessing there is rust/corrosion in one or all of them. I know they will say to just replace the sensors, but they cost! Can they be "cleaned"? K

You talking about the speed sensors? I’m not sure what type of speed sensor they use but if they’re magnets, they can collect metal shavings which would throw the readings off. I would give it a shot.
