z6 timing belt problem, searched pictures for explanation
94 hb si, had some bent valves on cylinder 2. We repaired the bent valves and now cannot get timing marks back correct. See picture below. Would go to green mark counterclockwise then one tooth over would go to position of red mark in picture. Would never line up directly with the mark on cover behind the cam gear. The mark on crank pulley and block were dead on. Motor is completely stock checked the code on cam gear and it is definitively z6 cam gear. Motor runs good however feels sluggish on when it tachs out. Have rotated motor several times to make sure slack was out of belt. Currently left it in the position where red mark was since it seemed a bit closer to the mark on the cover. Any help is greatly appreciated. Timing light is broken so i cant verify through that method yet.

Wow really. Lining timing marks up on a single cam is really easy. If you need to put a wrench on the cam gear bolt to turn it and hold it in place independent of the crank.

I know i can hold it with a wrench. Thats not really the point it will not line up on its own with the mark on the cover no matter which of the two teeth i put it on.

Has anyone else had this problem? Let me re ask the question. If it doesn't exactly line up with the mark on the cover which side would be better to leave it on right or left?

Install the timing belt with the cam marks most closely aligned. Then hook up the timing light to see whether you can adjust the ignition timing to spec. If you are able to do this, then you are good to go.

RonJ thanks I have not seen anyone else explain it exactly like this. Now it makes sense.

Re: z6 timing belt problem, searched pictures for explanation
Thanks again ronj@ht got the car fixed, had to adjust the timing belt more. It is within timing spec now 16 BTDC. Running perfect, however I still do not know what caused this, the cam gear is right the block and head are both d16z6. the only explanation I can see is someone switched the timing belt gear on the crank. To get it to 16 BTDC timing the yellow mark( in the picture) is where the factory mark on pulley now points when the crank pulley is aligned with mark on the block. Hopefully this can help someone else in the future.
