Y7 redline
My buddy just got an aftermarket tach for his lx and we need to know where to set the shift light at. (redline) He has a y7 that is bone stock with the exception of a full exhaust. Thanks.

tell him to get rid of the tach and get an ex cluster. the redline in that is close enough. also tell him not to take it to redline so he doesn't spin a bearing. he may not, but he may...
the y8 is something like 6800 and the y7 won't hit the limiter before then.
an aftermarket tach brings someone to one of two conclusions, this guy is a race car driver or this guy is a poser/'tard. the second being the most likely conclusion, although he may be a wonderful guy with lots of friends. just a heads up, don't want you sending the wrong message.

He went with the tach because he got it for next to nothing. I spent $175 on an ex cluster for my 98 hatch, and he just didn't want to spend the money. He just wants to know where he can shift safely while still enjoying some spirited driving. I did a y8 swap in mine and figured the y7 would top out before my y8. I am safe in that assumption, right?

Re: Y7 redline (laocivic)
yeah i got mine for $70 and i thought that was a bit high. turns out it's not. but if he want's to check ebay... it's "plug and play" and very nice looking.
oh and i push my y7 as hard and as far as i would push any y8. the biggest diff between the two motors is manifold arangement and the y8's extra "vtec kick" at whatever rpm. other lesser things like comp ratio, valve duration and or lift, and trans gearing.

Re: Y7 redline (laocivic)
Bought it off a guy in Maryland (ebay), and yes, it was damn near $175 after shipping. Since then I have not seen one go for less than $125. Do I feel like I got ripped off? Not in the slightest. I saw something I wanted, I have money, so I bought it.
