Would a washer be the problem for my low mpg?
96 civic coupe.
My mechanic replaced a fuel filter for me. He told me he forgot to put it a washer that comes with the fuel filter.. do you think this little thing could be leaking gas? B/C i'm getting like 90 miles/$10.00.. whereas a few months ago I got 300+ miles for $25.00
or fouled spark plugs? but i want answers for my fuel filter first
thanks, let me know

Check the filter and see if it's leaking, then you'll know if there is a problem.

Seems like if it were leaking enough to affect your mpg you'd be able to see the leak or atleast the residue from the leak around the fuel filter. I'd think you'd be able to smell it too...

i try to feel the bottom end of the filter where the washer is missing.. i smell or see no leak.
and gas prices in nevada didn't change that much.. maybe 5 cents, since i go through either chevron or sams club.
i'll switch it out with a new one when i get paid.. and come back here if it doesnt help

I have actually done this (or something similar) twice on two different Honda's. I both times accidentally put both washers on the same side. Gas could clearly be smelled in the car and the last time there was fuel all over the area of the filter and dripping on the ground. You would know if it were an immediate issue. Certainly you would know if it were leaking enough to decrease mileage.

step 1: Start Car
Step 2: Open Hood
step 3: Check for fuel leaking out of filter area
if there is fuel leaking put the washers in
if there is no fuel leaking then thats not the problem
step 4: Find new mechanic because that one is obviously not capable of doing the simplest of things
