A friend of mine at work was telling me about his problems with his civic. He recently went on a 400 mile trip and on that trip it started over heating and it does regularly overheat now.

I'm almost 100% sure it's a headgasket problem, he says he adds coolant on a daily basis and never sees leaks from the radiator. I believe it's a 92, it's a 4 door with minor rust on the front fender (accident) and the hood is losing its clear coat. It's an automatic with rougly 150k+ the interior is alright and such.

I can do almost all the work myself. Headgasket woulndn't take me long. I am looking for a beater during my h22 build. Would this civic be a good idea to buy for lets say $500? Would this car be realiable (is the auto tranny on these civics good? I know prelude trannies suck ***...) after the headgasket is fixed?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

yup for a daily driver the automatic trannies on this civic is a soldier they'll last a lot more than the engine

Ok, I'm about to buy this car from the guy as he is getting his new jetta soon and the hg is almost 100% postive blown.

I wanted to pull the whole engine and pretty much just rebuild it. Might as well replace the rings, bearing ect ect while the head is off. I was wondering what do parts for a rebuild like that usually cost(no labor just parts)? I just want to know so if it's around $600 i'll offer the guy a little less since he offered me $500 right off the bat.

any suggestions would be seriously appreciated

you say your building an h22? so just commute with the civic and then swap the engines, i would say go for it if its only 500. just please dont get a carbon fiber hood, thanks

i dunno man....i found alot of beaters that did not need anything but a tune for about 500. u got a blown gasket, and now ur thinking bout rebuilding the motor. gonna cost u more then u expect, especially since ur getting ur h22 done as well. imo, i would find another beater.
