Wife wants a stronger engine
My wife told me that she wanted a new engine because the lack of power in our 2000 4 door honda civic ex 5 speed (she use to have a 2g 4g63 awd). So i told her about ctr and itr engine (jdm), great engine, strong, and reliable. so then she said, "what about smog, would it pass?" i pause, ummmmmm lol not sure either? so if we WERE to get one, i told her that we well get the itr 98+ itr because of the crack angle senor (correct me if im wrong) and it cost just a little more then the ctr.
I did some research and someone was saying about replacement engine. so is its like (i can put a b16b in my civic because it came in a civic but not a
b18cR because that motor was never in a civic?) got me confuse because I was on
http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/replace.htm
and was at the engine change section and it says
The engine must be from the same type of vehicle (passenger car, light-duty truck, heavy-duty truck, etc.) based on gross vehicle weight.
Since the itr is a passenger car, can I put the itr engine in my 4 door?
what do i have to change do make it pass smog and ref?
My wife and I would really appreciate your help. thank you

Re: Wife wants a stronger engine
I think you can do the above option or just go with a simple B18b, Motor is torquey and mated to the b18b transmission feels much better than the d16y8 and tranny combo.
I went from y8 to b18b and noticed a big difference ( i could actually tow a little trailer now in the sedan, and its quite a cheap swap compared to ITR )

from the link you posted:
Engine Changes
Engine changes are legal as long as the following requirements are met to ensure that the change does not increase pollution from the vehicle:
The engine must be the same year or newer than the vehicle.
The engine must be from the same type of vehicle (passenger car, light-duty truck, heavy-duty truck, etc.) based on gross vehicle weight.
If the vehicle is a California certified vehicle then the engine must also be a California certified engine.
All emissions control equipment must remain on the installed engine.
Vehicles converted to 100% electric drive, with all power supplied by on-board batteries are considered in compliance with the engine change requirements. All fuel system components must be removed prior to inspection. For additional information contact the ARB helpline at (800) 242-4450
So it looks like you will need a 2000 or newer engine. also i dont think you can use an integra engine since it came from a different model vehicle. you might be able to do ctr though since it was available in 2000 civic's

Re: Wife wants a stronger engine
this is where im confuse at. about dpetro1 said about integra is a different model vechicle. but it is still the same type of vehicle (passenger car).. right?
and another thing. if i would to get a usdm itr, it has to say b18c5 on the block. or can it just be b18c?

has to be stamped c5 if you want it to ensure that you will pass since the b18c were only on the jdm models

Re: Wife wants a stronger engine
Just find a GSR swap and if you want a bit more power, install ITR cams and the OEM header. It's a very nice motor for a daily driver since it's quick and gets great gas mileage, it's not a completely unreasonable price, there's a fair bit of parts including ECUs. Theres a reason not too many of us have ITR swaps, it's just not worth the price.

Re: Wife wants a stronger engine
are you from CA?
if so, youll probably want to have the motor BARed.
so youll need a 2000 or 2001 motor. pretty hard to find. it took me 4 months to find a 2000 gsr(b18c1) motor for myself. good luck finding a 2000 typeR(b18c5). those are pretty rare, hard to find.
who is going to do the swap for you? you know youll need a few other parts if you want to keep power steering and A/C right? youll also run into the immobilizer issue. but theres a fix to everything. just giving you a heads up.
