So i decided to fix my wheel bearing problem today on my 98 ex 4door. for awhile i have been hearing a noise from my rear right wheel, and i figured it was the wheel bearing, i decided to go about fixing it on my own. well today i did it and the install went decently for a first time. The hardest part was actualy getting the drum brake off, but it finally came off, i replaced the bearing assembly, and put the drum back on, it drove well..made a little noise witch i figured was it just breaking in or something. So im drivin for about 10 minutes and then i hit a speed bump, and ocne i hit the speed bump i hear a high pitched squeeling like there is a distant all-clear(fire house horn) going off. Along with this the ABS light went on. The noise stopped on my way home since i figured i had to get this car back to my hosue asap...but the abs light stayed on and it soudned like the old wheel bearing did, so i hope i dindt mess up the new bearing as i only drove about 15 miles. If anyone knows anything to check for if maybe i did the install bad or if somehting got knocked off like the speed sensor...please get back to me on this problem because im going to ened this car fixed by tomorrow and i need to know what kinda time/money i will need to invest on this project.

take it to honda, a wheel bearing needs to be Pressed in, you probably fucked **** up pretty good.

on the rear drums on a ek you dont need to press anything in...its just an ssembly that gets replaced, the wheel bearing replacement on an ek is really easy im just worried...so thanks for ur input but im also not a moron

Actually that is what the hub looks like. The wheel bearing is inside of that. Take your car to a mechanic if you can't figure out what is wrong. That is what we get paid for.

i have friends that are mechanics, hey expleined to me that i needed a new wheel bearing and it was an easy fix, since i like diy because it increases my knowledge fo a car i do things myself instead of geting asraped by a mechanic for something that can cost 5 times less than they charge...so no thanks ill figure this one out on my own if no one would like to give some positive advice...

and i realize that that picture is the hub, i was illustrating the fact that i do not need to get a new bearing pressed in...

In this pic does the bearing just slide over the rear hub? If so, assembly looks very simple, i.e. no need to press in a new bearing race or bearing, etc, but I still think you need to pre-load the bearing before driving the car. Did you pre-load the bearing when you went to torque everything down?

could it be your brake dust shield rubbing against your brake rotor once it gets warmed up and more pliable? Try bending it a little back out of the way and see if it goes away.

well now all i hear is the same noise i use to hear...im thinking maybe i didnt put enough greese on when i put the hub in, or it maybe the break dist sheild...im going to test both of those out, i guess ill have to borrow my girlfriends for focus till itas fixed...lol...dohc zetec!!!...lol...thanks for all of the positive answers...and about the pre-loading of the bearing...this is gonna sound newbish but what does that mean..how do i preload the bearing because if i ened to d that maybe that will help as well...

one other thing is im thinking maybe my tie-rod is going to...all i know is its making a constant vuh vuh vuh vuh vuh vuh vuh sound

If you didnt preload the bearing correctly and or torque it to spec you could have screwed up the new bearing. Take it to a mechanic! that is what we get paid for..

LOL. Everybody thinks shops are such a ripoff but as you can see this guy just wasted money on a new hub possibly ruining the new bearing when he could have taken it to a shop and gotten the problem properly diagnosed and not wasted the $50 on the new hub.

Just because you have a lot of friends that are mechanics doesn't make you one.

Jack your rear and spin the tire, try to pinpoint the exact location of the noise.

fixed the problem anyway, i tourqued the hub bolt down to tight and its fine now, and i understand that having friends that are mechanics doesnt make me one, but everyone has to start somewhere and what seems to be an easy job. so thanks to the poeple with helpful advice, and boo to all the people that decided to act like retards and flame cuz i want to diy my wheel ebaring and spend 80 dollars instead of 300
