I just got a 95 civic EX... when i got it there was a DC Sports maxx air short ram intake, but other than that its all stock.. i was wondering what i should do first to get some more power but im on a kinda tight budget, so all opinions welcome but dont tell me to swap please, i know i need to but that isnt an option right now.. Thanks

The next best thing you can do to your civic is to throw on a DC Sports Header (4-2-1), but if you want a better high end speed go with the 4-1. It's probably the best header for our cars. After that you should consider putting an exhaust on your car. Those are pretty much the basics (least expensive) that you could do to gain the most horsepower.

An engine swap is not really that worth it. For the amount of money you would spend ($4,000+), when you could put that money into your D16Z6. THe only way those engines pump out as much horse as they say they do is with the car they are made for. My boyfriend also has a '94 civic EX, with intake, header, exhaust, and a high flow cat. He raced a 98-00 civic ex that had a B-18 (GSR) motor with the same mods, and after almost a complete quarter mile, the car only took him by a 1/4 of a car length. He also had on 15'' wheels, while my boyfriend had on 17''. (Yes, this guy knew how to race) This car like many others with DOHC VTEC swaps, turn out like ****, mainly because they get ahold of a bad motor or it doesn't get installed properly. So, choose wisely, it's not always cut and dry.

hrm... dc 4-1 headers, catback exhaust. i have those on my 00' ex and it's pretty fun, but i don't know what to do next lol! good luck with your car, don't bother with a swap unless you're hardcore bro! (oh yeah 95% of honda-tech will tell you to swap even if you tell them not to, isn't it hilarious?) peace and good luck

VTECprincess...the fact is..your boyfriend got beat..it doesnt matter if you win by an inch or a mile.. He got beat...So tell your boyfriend to keep waisting his money on a sohc...Im not knocking on Sohc motors i just think the DOHC has more potential. Now 95civicD16Z6..just do other mods dont get anything for that motor and save and get a swap...

D16Z6 is s underrated. It's all about the SOHC. There are so many options that people overlook. You can get brand new d16a6 pistons( from an 86-89 Integra), that will drop right in and raise compression. Do some good headwork and get that thing flowing. With a good valvetrain, and a good Skunk 2 or Zex cam( whichever profile you like), with a good CAI, DC header, and 2 1/4 in exhaust, you engine will be pretty solid and reliable. This could all be achieved for less than 1000 bucks if you do assembly. And if you want to get down, throw in a ZC tranny with an Si final drive, and you'll have an extremely close tranny to keep you skirtin'. A Stock Z6 has the same amount of torque as a b16. It's about getting air flow and gearing which brings out the potential. In about 1 month, I'll br revvin mine to 8.5 k all day long.

im sorry honey but you dont know what your talking about.
1) my swap cost me 2600$ SHIPPED to my door. (granted, its not a b18c but you can still get those for 3500$)
2) it got approx 2 seconds faster in the 1/4 mile. that was with 17" wheels and a stock exhaust. with my stock wheels it ran a 15.9 (struggling about 6500 because of stock exhaust and SHITTY tires)
3) its 90% driver. ive seen 15 second STOCK hatchbacks, and 17 second integra gsr's.
4) it was just 1 race, you go race any other b18c powered civic and he WILL get his *** handed to him.

swaps are well worth the money if your looking for bigger and better things.

how much would the d16a6 pistons cost, and isnt the D16Z6 better than the a6? why would i want to get pistons off a weaker engine? i dont know much just doesnt seem logical to me but if they really are better how much $$$? and i dont know how to do any of this **** myself... what is headwork and how much would that cost? I am thinkin about getting a dc header (4-1) and maybe magna flow exhaust because it seems to be the best price and im not worried about name brand if magna flow isnt that popular on here

the a6 pistons raise the compression of the z6, which in turn gives you more hp. They cost like 30-50 bucks from honda.

Headwork is getting the cylinder head ported and polished, a new cam, three-angle valve job etc.. (basically allowing the engine the breath a lot better) depending on what u what done it could run u $500-$1200 or if u got a hook-up then it could be much cheaper.

look into the apexi WS for a good cat-back. Not too loud and it has some good power gains.

The most important part of all the upgrades you add to your car is to get your car TUNED. Best way to get maximum gains.

ps oh yea welcome to HT

swap it....You can get LS swaps for $1500 these days. I almost bought a 97 LS swap w/ 23K on it for $1200 shipped from a salvage yard. Just search, you'll find the right motor for you. Unless you plan to turbo the SOHC, your going to be sorry you ever spent a dime on it.

For all you illiterate fools who responded to my post, he said what can he do to his SOHC motor without getting a swap. I'm not cutting on DOHC motors, but I've witnessed many DOHC VTEC swaps, (and unless you pay bank to have them done right), they all turned out really shitty. Oh, and to AllmotorB18, whatever, I think you need to stop quoting the Fast and the Furious and get a real life.
P.S. Just because I'm a chick doesn't mean anything, I probably know more than half of you idiots out there.

Vtec Princess

JDM B16A (usdm A3) HP= 160 at 7600 RPM cost 1300$
JDM B16A (2nd Gen) HP= 170 at 7800 RPM Cost 2400 $
JDM B16A (3rd Gen) HP= 170 at 7800 RPM Cost 2400 $
JDM B16B HP=185 at 8200 RPM Cost 4500 $

USDM d15b8 HP= 70 at 4500 RPM Cost Already in Gen 5 cx
USDM D15B7 HP=102 at 5900 RPM Cost Already in Gen 5 DX and LX
USDM D15Z1 HP = 92 at 5500 RPM Cost already in Gen 5 VX
USDM D16Z6 HP=125 at 6600 RPM COst already in Gen 5 Si

so your starting at best in the hole 35 hp (assuming you have the D16z6 engine and the swap is the bottom of the b16 family ) And I know this is gonna come as a suprise but your intake headers and exhaust didnt really give you 27 HP like the box prommised. The easiest way to fill the HP gap is to use Forced induction .. Cost bout 2400 plus install and look your at the same price .. !!!!!

In short

JDM engine ......... about 2000 dollars
one tank of gas .............. 13.00 dollars
Beating vtecpricess in a street race .... Priceless!!!

Life sucks wear a hat !
