Default What's the most painless SOHC swap for a 1994 Civic Del Sol > 6 of VIN inside

The title to the car says Civic Del Sol (NO "S" or Si)

For Choices sake:
d15b
d16zc
or
d16y7

I just need to know what engine will work easiest since i bought a shell without a motor. I would hate to have to go buy misc. parts since i have no donor engine to swap parts from.

1ST 6 OF VIN = JHMEG1 <

I got a d16y7 swapped into one before and i know we just reused stock intakes but i'm not sure what else had to be switched over like water lines etc etc.

I want a low mileage motorset so it'll be hard to find a stock application. I would go SOHC JDM if I have to. I've read the d15b and zc threads but it's hard coming to a conclusion.

p.s i don't care about power just reliability

Does it still have the ecu? If so look at the ecu code if its a P28 then it had a d16z6 and that would be the easiest to swap back in. No sohc is really harder to swap than the other, its just the wiring if your going vtec from a non-vtec. If the ecu is a P0x (the last number is 5 or 7, but one of those is the d15b VTEC ecu) it was a d15b7 non-vtec. All sohc are just as reliable as another if properly maintained.

if you just want reliability and absolutely no power then just go for a D15b7, their probably dirt cheap nobody wants one cuz they dont have anything for power. Of course I dunno if you'll find a low mileage one of those very easily. my friend has a y7 its pretty good i don't think he's had problems with it, i don't know anything about the z6 from personal experience so i cant speak there.

I'll be bringing the car home on this week so can check the ECU.

I've read that eg1 = S model which should is non VTEC.

I might just do a y7 again since the mileage can be somewhat confirmed VIA VIN. It's just that I didn't remember what we changed when we did the swap back in 2004 - probably just A/C power steering brackets manifolds and distributor.


Any more thoughts?

d15b = $600 plus shipping for engine tranny and I believe harness with 35000 miles on it and a start up guarantee from hmotors. Thats where I would pick one up if I were you. 130 hp, swap a y8 intake on it and do some engine work and throw in some ZC pistons and you're good to go. I run a stock d15b and get ~40 mpg city and push around 150hp with (very) light modification and engine work.

You dont need the intake mani. swap, but the y8 intake mani. is the "type r" manifold of the d-series, so its a cheap way to get a few more hp.

dude swap a d16z6 .. from sohc models is the best engine very reliable, and is also a vtec engine.. gas saver too..one of my del sol has a d16z6 and with a s20 tranny. try to see if you can find that tranny is a really good tranny ...z6 engines are call the master of all sohc engines... good luck

Your car is an S model del sol, like mine
its gunna be easier just to find a d16z6 and rock that than wait for something to come in the mail IMO

The easist thing you can swap in is a D15B7, takes a P06 ecu, to whoever posted P05 or P07 neither of those ECU's will work, P05 is for a D15B8 found in US CX hatchbacks, P07 is found in VX hatchs, the only thing i will warn you about is D15B7s seem to have a serious problem with headgaskets, i've pulled more of them than i can count, and even when you replace the headgasket in them they only seem to last a year. theres a technical service bulletin #97-047 detailing the problem, vtec d-series engines are not affected. but to answer your question D15B7 is the absoulte easiest thing you can install, but if it were me i'd probably drop in a D15B vtec for the small bit of wiring involved as i tend to find them considerably more reliable.

JDM DOHC OBD1 ZC will drop right in, i kinda forgot about that, but you'll want a P29 ECU to get it to run right and they're rare as hell. A friend of mine got one after he drove a rod through the block of his second D15B7, (first one had a blown headgasket) and he ran it with a P06 ecu as thats all we had, it worked good, but the fuel cutoff was definately too early, the only other things your gonna run into is that your gonna need to make the upper rad hose, most people just use heater hose and there wont be a place for the purge solinoid on the back of the intake, and if you use the P29 ecu you will have to go with a single wire O2 sensor, probably more work than you want to get into, but essentially no wiring and they work good, somewhat hard to find and hard to find parts for are the biggest issues with them really

I'm kinda leaning toward the y7 now believe it or not

JDM motor sounds like headache and thats what i don't need right now, maybe later but NOT NOW LOL


94EG8 I need to do SOHC - I've heard of the JDM ZC that's basically a y7 being used.

Y7 might actually be a pretty good choice, swap the intake and exhaust for those off a D15B7 or D16Z6 and use an OBD1 distributor, Y7s definately don't seem to suffer from the issues d15b7s did, and you should be able to find one with reasonably low mileage that hasn't been abused to badly, the biggest thing is make sure whatever you buy has a warranty so that if it does burn oil or have a blown head gasket you can get your money back.

whoever said you can get a jdm d15b with a tranny for $600 from hmotors doesnt know what theyre talking about.

but, jdm d15b, best single cam there is.

idk that a d16y7 would be your best choice either.. its OBD-2 and your car is OBD-1 theres gonna be more work in that then there would be wiring vtec.. i would personally go with the OBD-1 d15b7 if you really dont wanna wire vtec but its only three wires and if you do then go with the z6 or an OBD-1 d15b

EGhatchguy, yes, your right, D16Y7 is OBD2, going in an OBD1 car, however if you read above he is going to use an OBD1 intake and exhaust, most likely from a D15B7, an OBD1 distributor and an OBD1 ecu, so no wiring at all. D15B7s are at this point a poor choice because its next to impossible to find one that hasn't been abused or overheated or have half a million miles on it.

oops didnt read that part ya id personally want a y7 and if hes got all that stuff then that is the best option i just saw no donor motor and figured he had nothing..
