Umm it's still being made.
They first started using it in select models as early as 2001.
here's a complete list for you:

Don't I know it. I wish it was cheaper too but also, I've been hearing tons of rumours about it being quite hard to fit in. Someone told me you have to cut into the firewall to make it fit in properly... I don't think that's true though but seeing as it's so costly I haven't even bothered looking into how it's done.

Impossible according to what I've found on the Net...Of course, you can;t always trust what you find on the net.
From what I read the 1st cars that had it were JDM Type R's in 2001. If yours had it stock in 1997, could you please provide us with some form of proof as I did not find anything prior to 2001. (not saying you're wrong but could you prove it for us so we can know 100% pls)

i've thought that too. but we'll see how long the g23's last. its a fairly new idea, and not many people have done it yet. but k20 still is redicacrazy over priced

Hmm the G23 is cheap but it's one of those frankenstein type of deals that can be damned tricky to dial in. BUT at roughly less than 1k$ I can see the appeal.
I wonder what the reliability is like.
here's Pirate McFred's build thread on the G23: https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-prelude-4/new-frankenstein-engine-%3D-g23-f23-h23-write-up-long-56k-beware-1046336/ he's got a K24 hybrid build going too... That one looks interesting too.
@ RedracerK20: no worries. You got my hopes up thinking a K-engine might fit into a pre-2001 chasis.

K24 bottom end with k20 head is the way people are going.
You can find a k24 full motor for less than 3 grand and sell the head and transmission (or keep it if you want a 6 speed)
I was so close to buying one near me for 2500 bucks, had 30k miles on it, FULL everything. harness, transmission, all accessories, and ecu.
Could try selling some of that stuff off and making the cost of building a k24/k20 hybrid cheaper :D

Hmm that is a damned good option.
Especially since the bore and stroke of a k20 (type r) is virtually the same as the k24's.
The only diff is the stroke which is longer in the k24. (90mm vs the k20's 86mm)

Re: what year was the k series made?
the K20's do fit in the Pre2001 cars.. I know on an Eg you have to cut your passenger side mount off and weld a new one on though.. other than that it goes in like other swaps, and you just have to worry bout getting the shifter cables ran on it.. They have the H23a vtec's now.. I'm wanting to buy one of them rather than building the G23.. i mean they are the same thing lol.. but won't have to worry about the DIY plugs on the H head for the F block..
