Default What year engine?

How can you identify what year the engine is. For example, I am looking for a D16Z6 to purchase as a stock rebuild for my 95 EJ1. I know that in CA the year of your engine must be the same year as the car or newer in order for it to be BAR'd. So my question is how do I identify what year a replacement engine is? I know the D16Z6 came in model years 1992-1995 but I do I ensure I find one that has been pulled from a 1995 so that I can comply for BAR?

...but only if you know where to look, which the OP obviously doesn't. It's not exactly clear, either.

The year stamp is the one to the right, since everyone seems to be in the habit of giving half of the information tonight.

I googled exactly his question and bunches of info popped up! So i just figured a little effort here, a little effort there and problem solved! I find pictures to be most informative when finding block stamps.

I have seen this sticky and for 1995 it only shows info on an Auto and I have a 5-Speed. Also the 1995 code listed (PO8-2) is also the same code that is listed on that same sticky as a 1994 EX and a 1992 Si....so that code really doesn't tell me its a 1995 engine.
D16Z6
92 Si D16Z6 5sp------- P08-2 (9/2) stamped on RS of code.
93 Si D16Z6 5sp-------P08-4 (9/3) stamped on rs of head
93 EX D16Z6 5spd----- P08-4
93 EX D16Z6 5sp-------P08-3
94 EX D16z6 5 spd---- PO8-2
94 Si D16z6 5sp-------- P08-3
94 EX D16Z6 5sp--------P08-4
94 SI D16z6 5sp -------P08-5
95 EX D16Z6 Auto------P08-2
I am really wondering if there is any way to decode the serial number on the block below the "D16Z6" stamp that will tell me what year the block is since the head code of PO8-2 doesn't seem to reliable.

Look to the right of the head code. two numbers inside the circle indicates the year.( Ex. 95)

Also slomofo provided the answer to how to identify the block as a 94. Thank you slomofo:

Also on the head stamp, quite often the stamp will be the previous year, so the 94 will have a 9/3 casting stamp as the 1994's were typically released in the 4th quarter of 1993. So the manufacturing was done the year before.
