well im not looking for best performance really, im just worried about what has the best protection. i plan on doing some kind of swap in the future when i learn more, but that will be a couple years down the road. i just want to take good care of whats under the hood now. i geuss i will get a honda filter and ill go with 5w30 valvoline max life. i used that on my old car and it worked great. but i was wondering y use 5w30? ive always been told to use 10w30 in cars. maybe im just stupid or something.

LOL
i always used penzoil full synthetic 10 30, but then again i worked at kragen and i got everything at at "5 finger discount".
just go with 10 30 and you should be fine.

honda recommends 5w30 for a reason.

It does hurt to upgrade to 10-30 for higher milage engines.

Is that a fact or opinion? If it's a fact, then prove it.

oh, so you think the thicker oil is gonna help undo any harm that mileage and abuse has done??? no, its a band aid, plus it takes longer to get to the top end.

I run 10w30 Maxlife because my 268,000 mile D16Z6 runs best with it. Is it fixing anything? No. Do I give a ****? No. I'm going to beat the **** out of this engine until it dies and then I'll go to the gumball machine on the corner and get another one for five nickles.
Nobody on this forum save the few who have fully built engines and road race religiously need to be using Mobil1 or anything of the sort. I don't care if your B18B turbo EG is making 350 at the wheels, regular motor oil or - at the very most - a semi-synthetic is all that's necessary to run reliably.

i do agree, but when giving a recommendation, the factory recommended oil viscocity is what i will always give.

Re: (schardbody)
I agree... use what is recommended if your engine doesn't burn oil... if it burns a little and you want it to burn little less, go with slightly higher viscosity... if it burns 5w30, go with 10w30 or 10w40 and it will burn a little less...
But if you have no burning issues, use whatever you used so far...
Bottom line is: don't waste money on the best vrand on the market because your engine doesn't need it... yes, it is best to stay with known brands (Castrol, Mobil, Shell, Amsoil, Penzzoil blablabla) but you don't have to buy the most expensive...
just buy some oil with recommended viscosity and change it regularly and change your filter every time...
As far as the filter goes, I would use Honda OEM, but there are many decent brands on the market... Honda OEM is your safest bet, but you can't go wrong with K&N, Mobil or Amsoil filter...

Re: (KKVTi)
well like i said before i am not worried about performance, im worried about protection. i understand i dont need the best stuff, but i just got this car a few months ago, and this is huge investment for me. i have had terrible luck with the last 3 junkers ive owned and im afraid of screwing something up on this car. it is in perfect like new condition and i want it to stay that way. the last thing i need is something stupid to die on me in a year and have to pull out the whole damn motor. i just cant afford something like that. the reason why i origanally asked this question is because i just dont know what type of oil is usaully used in honda engines. i had no idea about using 5w30 instead of 10w30. thats why i asked. im pretty sure that it doesnt burn oil so i will use the 5w30 valvoline maxlife. ill pick up an oem filter. then everything should be fine. thanks for the help everyone. you guys always help me out when i need it.

I completely understand and I agree with that Lower viscocity oil improves gas mileage, after all, which is why newer Hondas have moved to 5w20. We called it "water" when I worked at Valvoline

at operating temp 5w20 is no thinner or thicker than 5w30, it starts out thinner when cold, which i would say is a good thing, its just not as available as 5w30... my personal preferance since everyone is giving theres is mobil 1 clean 5000. no doubt mobil 1 puts time and effort into there r&d, but i dont need synthetic, and dont wanna deal w/ the leaks of synthetic, so i use the next best thing.
