What motor do i get?? B16a2 - Ls/vtec - H22a
ok right now i have a B16A2 w/ a gsr tranny lined up for my civic
the only downside on this motor is that it has a little under 80k miles on it
i have the chance to get a LS/VTEC from one of the local shops here in chicagoland for the around the same price as my b16a (all i have to do is sell my b16 head & block and use the remaining parts on the ls/vtec head & block)
ive heard lots of mixed opinions about the ls/vtec motor
mostly they sound like this:
"well i heard that ls/vtec is FAST AS **** but is very UNRELIABLE"
that UNRELIABLE part is the only thing holding me back on this motor
also i have another opportunity to get an H22A put into my car
just so happens that my friend has one sitting in his garage!!
i havent gotten all the info about this motor yet (miles, year, etc)but i will this week
he tells me that he will take my b16 setup plus about a grand or so on top of it (he says he paid over 3k for the h22)
that doesnt sound too bad to me but it will put me about a month behind schedule (i had planned to use that money for the swap /tranny conversion)
so right now my options are:
1) stick with the b16a2
2) LS/VTEC
3) H22A
so if any has any advice i could sure use some right now
oh and in case anyone wanted to know
i plan to put in a turbo around next summer

The b16a2 is a pretty good motor and has the potential for boost. The ls/v-tec is a really good motor if you have the money to make it reliable and able to withstand abuse at redline. The h22 is a great drag motor, but you really compromise handling. The best bet all motor is a gs-r or better yet, a type-r.

If i were you id go with the b16, especially if your on a budget. LS/VTEC is fast but also super unreliable unless you've got deep pockets. Take the b16 block to a machine shop and have them bore out the cylinders (they may have to re-sleeve), .020, .030, .040 or 25mm. While your there you might consider having the head milled. The problem with an H22 is unless your drag racing its not the best motor for a civic (the weight and how it sits.) Then again its your money and your car so do what you think is best.

are you going to drag the car or what? H22 is amazing for drag, but sucks big for corners. The weight difference between a B16 and B18 is about 68lbs. (i think) So that is one small factor to think about. And if you are going to race Solo II or anything the less weight pushing the front through the corner the better. However, you can't get as much TQ from a 16 so you will be at a disadvantage there. I went with a B16 because I wanted to have the lightest B series and rev to 10k. I really want to get into a B18C block for the TQ though.

depends on what you wanna do drag or auto X. i'm happy with just a b16a setup although there are times when you wish you had a more powerful motor. why not just get a b18c block and do a poor mans type r. then turbo that.
