take a look at the engine code on the block it is half way down the block right beside where the trans mounts to the block. it will be on a little wedge plate sticking out. You might have to clean the location to see the numbers

looks like a d16z6. doesnt the VX engines come with the Vtec-E valve cover? but then again, the intake manifold looks a little small to be from an EX or SI. plus, i dont believe that the d16z6 headers comes with the headers whose cat is on it. from the looks of the headers, it has a cat on the header instead of a secondary cat at the end of the headers. im leaning more towards the d15z1 like you said. someone probably changed the valve cover or something.

The pick is really hard to tell what it is the 92-93 d16z engines didn't come with vtec on the valve cover. I think honda started using the vtec on the 94-95 d16z. The cat buy the header was on cal cars and i don't know wht else used that cat.

I beg to differ, my z6 doesnt say vtec.

I have owned z6's and y8's that came out of the cars with vtec valve covers so maybe I was a little quick to say that they all cam with vtec covers but don't tell me that the z6 and y8's didn't at all. I guess the assumption we can make now is that it was the car that warranted whether or not it got a vtec valve cover and not just the motor. Maybe the z6's from the 92-95 si's had it but the ex's didn't?? I don't know.

from the location of the dipstick you can tell it's not a y8
i think it's a z1, but it could be a z6 with a different im and exhaust.
i don't think you could say for sure from that picture

naa man cuz my Z6 had VTEC, my D15B had VTEC, and my VX had VTEC-E "all obd-1 so maybe it was just an OBD-1 thing, or JDM thing since I got all my motors from JDM Addictions in Orlando...???

that looks to be a Z1 to me.

intake manifold plenum is the size of a quarter, it kind of looks like a five wire O2 in the exhaust manifold (when you blow up the pic) and the wonderful EGR setup on the firewall.

not all Z1's say VTEC-E on the valve cover.

a 93 if I had to guess....

I think ur right Relic... Cuz the VTEC-E motor I had was a 95 vx motor, and my friends 93 3stage vtec-e **** didnt say VTEC-E it just said VTEC on it so theres a good possibility that it could be like a 92-93 VX motor...

I would say its NOT a y8 or z6, due to the manifold, and o2 sensor placing...as well as the dip stick location...

I Say its a d16z6 with a z1 exhaust manifold, because it only has 1 vtec solenoid, and both the z1 and d15b 3 stage vtec have 2 vtec solenoids. The intake manifold resembles a d16z6 as well. dipstick location is the same as a d16z6 too.

d16y8--No (dipstick loc)
d16y5-No (it manifold size)
D16y7-No (dipstick, it manifold)
D15b 3stgvtec- No( only 1 solenoid)
D15z1-No ( ^)

wow 4 people in a row with wrong info.
(I love how the VX has so much mystery around it)

the D15Z1 does not have two VTEC solinoids, ONLY the OBD2 D15B in japan came with two solinoids. (one of a few D15B variations)

some VX's came with the VTEC-E cover, some did not. It's not obvious why it's like this. Maybe different manufacturing plant or parts supplier.

If I wasn't so lazy... I mean busy... I'd make a pic showing all the tell tales that show a buyer that a VX is really a VX.

there is no such thing as an OBD2 Z1.
OBD1 = VX = D15Z1
OBD2 = HX = D16Y5

VTEC-E only has one VTEC solenoid.

3-stage VTEC is the only one that has two solenoids. (pre 2001)
more about it ---> http://www.b18c5eg.com/VTEC/3stagevtec.html

the car could have a Z1 swap... it's a growingly common swap since fuel prices don't want to stop climbing.

the VIN will be a dead give away. (reading down)
