Default What do you guys think of this?

Hi H-T,

I just want your opinion on this. After having lost a pretty good deal on a local B16A2, I have actually managed to source yet another one!! Anyways, it's off a 2000 SiR (I'm in Canada), it's got 38000 km (about 23000 miles?), and it includes just about everything I have determined to be required in my research, save a couple of items. It's close by (free shipping!), and the price is right. I just want your opinion as to the condition of the engine, so here goes :

The parts I don't have are a proper ECU (I'm planning on getting a chipped P28, as I have a 1995 OBD1 Si, EX in the States), the shift linkage, an Integra wiring harness and a Del Sol A/C bracket.

For the shift linkage - what are my options? Do I NEED the Si one? My understanding, based on my research on this site, is that I can use an Integra shift linkage - is this correct?

Now, Tom mentioned that if I use an Integra engine wiring harness, the swap should be basically plug-and-play. I would just like to expand on this a little...by "engine harness", you mean the harness from the engine to the shock towers, correct? For the ECU side of the harness, I simply use my current loom? Also, you mention that if I get a GS-R/Type-R harness, the swap will be totally plug-and-play...the implication, therefore, is that if I find an LS one, it won't be?

Am I forgetting anything here?

Thanks!

EDIT : Forgot to mention that one of the things I'll need to get is a set of Integra engine mounts...if I'm correct, I'll need :

1. Timing cover side : both mount and bracket off an Integra;
2. Rear : Integra mount (stock bracket);
3. Front : Integra brackets.

EDIT TWO : What an idiot! Forgot to mention they are asking 2500$ CDN for it - about 2100$ U.S., I guess.

Wow, quick reply - I was just finishing up my first edit, you prompted me to add another one...

Anyways, so is that where the engine code is? That blotch of red paint? I don't know why that is so...any way to confirm from the pics that this IS a B16A2? I'll ask the guy some further pics tomorrow...

Hmmm....well, it's a reputable wrecker. Without wanting to resurrect the age-old engine swap debate, I guess I should also point out that I have access, for the very same price (2500$ CDN), but from another wrecker, to a complete Integra write-off that was T-boned, with 110 000 kms. I'd have the B18B, the front/rear brakes and the wheels that I could use. You guys think that would be a better idea?

Id take the B18B over the B16 anyday.

Forget all motor DOHC....

Boost your sohc.
Best way to get the most horse power out of every dollar spent is to turbo charge your sohc...
You'll be making even more power than a Type R motor
I love hearing my turbo spool & bov going off...

I thought about that - but my SOHC has 270000 kms (170 000 miles...?), and I think that's a lot to start boosting it. The reason I'm swapping is the be a bit pro-active. Right now, it's running fine...but it's getting tired. And turbo is not something that's totally out of the question for later on either...but for the new engine, whichever one that is. And I understand the B18b is generally thought of as better for boost.

The motor looks clean and very low miles, now a full b16 swap is worth 2500 but a b18b is not worth 2500... if you could get the b18b for cheaper than you should go with that.

for the money..if you say you would keep sohc boost a possibility just buy another single cam motor,(you said yours is getting tired) and build it while you still have your high mileage one in the car. Then just take a weekend off and swap it.

I would boost single as well, The b16 in its stock form isnt worth it - 2k appx for b16 for what 30 hp over single- i could get 200 hp out of a single d16y8 for 1k and the rest for what ever else i want as for the longevity of it thats all based on #1 maintainance #2 driver #3 tunning ! no tune of course the block is going to **** all over and it dosnt matter if it is a d or a b its an aluminum block and head

Boost SOHC at low level for now.

BUY another sohc block and build it on the side. When your ready, pull the block and put in the built one and turn the boost up and retune!!

After going b series, then turbo, then blowing it up and buying another one........I wish I could do it all over again and I would have never got rid of the SOHC.

For a daily driver this is the best bang for the buck.

People answer his questions this thread is not ment to be a B16 vs B18 or a D series vs. B series debate.

No ish!
The guy can't decide between a b16 and b18. And the sohc guys are all over it suggesting he buy a new sohc and go boost..?!! WTF.
This is why this debate will never end.

If I were you (if they'll let you): I'd buy the b16, buy the tegra brakes/wheels etc. Then later-on get an LS block. This way you'll already have the b16 head, tranny, and you plan to buy a vtec ecu anyway. Quick and easy lsvtec.

I wish I would have done it this way, instead of buying my LS and scrambling to get all the b16 parts (and now scrapping most of my LS swap).

This is the smartest post on the whole thread! Agreed. You could get a b18b long block for like 750 dollars from hmotors...

I guess if "smartest" is spending a lot more money, then sure!

not trying to keep up the debate but I was one who said stay SOHC and I have 2.0 GSR motor right now.

From personal experience its just cheaper to go that route.

Parts are easier to find and cheaper.

Most of us really are just modders of our daily drivers, most of us will not reach astronomical whp levels, so for the most of us, the sohc would fit into those categories as being the cheapest.

To end the b16/B18 debate, if its going to be boosted, who cares??? Pick one and turbo the fawk out of it.
