What could be causing my random heating problems?
Since my car is out for about the next 3 weeks i decided to grab my dads old AT 92 Si and put it to use again.
The car had been out of use due to a bad radiator, we just changed the top "end tank" (im sorry, don't know what its really called in English) and the leaking problems stopped. But now that car has a very random behavior regarding temperature.
When im going up hill the temperature will rise 3/4 of the way to Hot and after like 50 seconds drop back real fast to normal temperature. It does this but every time it drops back it goes a little higher, in the end after about 4 times of this process i have to stop the car. Going down hill the car does not over heat and on flat terrain it remains a bit over normal temperature but is drivable.
I thought it might be something like the thermostat having trouble opening and closing but im really clueless. I also notice when the end tank was changed they used a new cap that read 0.9 instead of the usual 1.2.
I searched but found only different situations, thanks in advance.

put the front end in the air, take off the cap, run it till the fan comes on to make sure all the air is out of the cooling system.

Wouldnt air in the system cause idle problems as well? The car idles perfectly.

When you put a bigger pressure cap, you raise the water's boiling point.
Maybe it's time for a new headgasket?

Does you fan come on?
Also does you temp needle sometimes move erraticly?
Cause I had the same type of problem when I swaped in my built motor.
Car would Idle fine.
Runs Strong
Bleed the cooling system
Replaced Thermostat
Tested the fan and thermoswitch
But the car would slowly have the temp needle climb to the point of overheating. Funny thing after doing all that I decied to replace the temp sensor which runs the gauge in your Cluster, It turned out after I got the head built I forgot to tighten that sensor. I guess the bad grounding caused the needle to read higher that it really was. And the reason my fan never turned on was because the car was running very cool.
A sigh a relief after figuring that one out.

The fan does come on, the needle moves slowly, no jumping, its reading well, the car was for sure over heated when i poped the hood the first time...

No tears. Only dreams, now.
I'll help!
First, check your coolant, and make sure that you have enough.
Second, check the bleeder screw... the little valve that lets air out of the hoses.
Tighten it, but not too far, or it will break.
Squeeze the hoses when the car is running to make sure that there is actually fluid in them.
If there isn't, something's clogged.
Check the coolant mixture.. (half antifreeze, half water).
And, the thing I think it is, change the thermostat. It'll take you 20 minutes, and cost less than $15. Put a lower temperature thermostat on there while you're at it.

Oh, and the "end tank" that you're talking about. This wouldn't happen to be made of white plastic would it? That's called the "overflow resevoir". If that's the case, then it may just be your head gasket.
One way to make sure that it's not the gasket is to check the color of the coolant, and the oil. If either of those look strange, let us know.

Re: (VashTheStampede)
Thanx a lot.
Im sure the mixture of coolant water is off, i will fix that in the morning, and make sure that there is enough fluid there and no air bubbles. If that doesnt do the trick, thermostat.

I was talking about the top of the radiator, where the cap goes.
