What civic engine is this...?
my gf wants to by a civic coupe off some guy who knows nothing about cars...
Its a 1996 civic coupe, 1.8l 5sp manual. It has ABS and Dual airbags.
I asked him if it was a Vti or a Vti-r, and he said it isn't a vtec, but its a 'POD' engine, which is a high performance engine, but not vtec. (hey, that what he said, not me!) As if that wasn't bad enough, he told me that i could buy a vtec chip for around $120 and it would have vtec then. I told him he's a ******...
Anyway, this car has done 200,000 klms (not sure what that is in miles) so i just want to see if it is a good quality engine that is going to last a lot longer.
I thought it might have been a b18, but if you know what it is, let me know.

it could be a B18. why dont u just take a look at the motor and read the stamp on the block.. is should tell u what kind of motor it is. and as for the 200,000 klms, that should be about a little more than 100,000 miles.

Since I don't know were you are I think VTi and VTi-r line are same all over the world. Since 1.8 was never offered on the civic from the factory, check and see the block of what it says on it if says B18c or B18b.
If its a B18c then it has a VTEC and might just need to put in a VTEC ECU
If its a B18B then it has to go through a lot of changes before it can get a VTEC from just a chip.
The valve cover will most likly give away the engine. It will say a VTEC on it unless he has a aftermarket one that doesn't have anything.
1996 VTi specs
1999 VTi-R Specs

I am pretty sure this guy is just an idiot. Unfortunately he lives 3 hours away, so I don't want to drive over to it just to look under the bonnet. I was hoping the dude could help me out, but he seems to know nothing about engine in general...

tell him to look for that chicken scratching in front of the engine where the engine mates with the tranny. tell him look for b18(fill in the blank), he might be compitant enough to look for numbers. especially if you give him half of them

I don't think any of the 96-98 (hatchbacks) came with ABS. But I could be wrong. Ill check my manual.
Maybe some of the sedans or the EX coupe came with abs.
Anyway this guy sound like a ******.

Re: (pucho)
Thee is no motor like this guy is talking about. The only motor I can think about that would be even close to what you are saying is the B18C4 which comes in the accords over here in Germany. The only thing wrong with that is that it is V-TEC! This guy sounds like a complete moron don't do buiness with him.

Re: (Nerv2g)
This pic is from South Africa where the civic's are called Ballade. This one is the 180i, which has an LS motor in it. I can almost guarantee it's a B18B in that chingadera.

go pick yourself up an idiot manual, if there was a 1.8L sohc motor (which i do not know for sure ) it would not be in any acura manual. it would be in a HONDA manual
