I went with 205/40/16 on mine. You know, to keep the original overall rotational diameter.

i have 215/40's on my 16x7 in rims. had 205/45's but they would rub going in and out of places.
i like the 215/40's, imo, they dont rub, and they're a litle wider, and doesn't mess the speedometer up too much.

It depends upon what vehicle it's being installed on. For many Civics, including the '96 EX that the original poster owns, 205/45-16 or 215/45-16 would be the correct sizing.

Oh my, I must've misread. Yes, the 45 will be appropriate for you car, as it takes a larger diameter tire. My bad.

Im pretty sure you are wrong, a 45 series on a 16" is closer to a 15" rim with a 55 series, than a 40 series is.

Thanks for reading the above posts, and posting regardless of what they say. But, if you indeed did not read them, I guess it's just your mistake and you're not really being an ***.
I actually admitted that I was wrong, and that I misread that this diameter question was actually for the 96 civic, and not a 92-95.

Indeed, on the '96 Civic, 205/45-16 or 215/45-16 will be closest in diameter to the stock 185/65-14 or 195/55-15 tires. Using a 205/40-16 or 215/40-16 will result in too small a diameter.

I was writing that and confirming my being right, while the correct information was posted. Not trying to be an ***, but you should not post the wrong info if you are unsure

Haha, true. In my mind I was sure, but I did indeed misread the year of the car that the wheels were going on. It's alright, my bad dude.

Re: what are the best tire size for 16" rims? (ShinotakuX)
The first number is tire width in millimeters, the second number is the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the first number, and the last number is the diameter of wheel the tire is supposed to fit. Or you could always look through this.

These are mislead advice, as they are both only valid for 92-95's. The advice needed is for a 96 body style.
Got some information by just shopping by car type on tirerack.com, and got this for the 96 civic via calculations:
Optional 16" 205/45-16
It's the same as everyone else keeps saying.

You are going to want them balanced so you might as well just have them balance and mount them, unless you want to lug the rims and tires to the shop, have them mount them on the rim and balance and then lug them back to your house to swap out the old with the new.

Definitely have the tires mounted by a shop. I've actually had decent experience with Wal-Mart, and they're quite inexpensive.
