Weird squeal - Movie included for diagnosis
I have a weird squeal coming from my car - a 94 si.
http://www.wow-blitzkrieg.com/movies/squeal.wmv
In first gear, under WOT, it squeals from 5-7k
In second gear, under WOT, it squeals from 5-7k
In third gear, under WOT, it squeals from 6-7k
In fourth gear, under WOT, it doesn't squeal.
In fifth gear, I can't get up to 5k without doing 110+, so I can't really test it.
When I rev the car in neutral, there's no squeal, so I'm pretty sure it's something having to do with the transmission. At first I thought maybe my tranny gears might have been screwed, but the decrease in squeal range as I upshift makes me think that it could be the torque overpowering the clutch. I recently installed a greddy turbo kit, so is probably the cause of the bad clutch, if indeed it is the clutch.
Can anyone think of what else a noise like this might be? And if you agree with me on it being the clutch, how can I make sure that it is the clutch, before I rip out the tranny and install a new one?

I had a similar problem. My water pump went. Blew the motor because of. Oh Desiree I'm sorry, I guess I gotta buy a K24A for her now... Check the waterpump. It is also possible it is a tranny issue as well.

sure does, that's why I was guessing the clutch.. if you're sure that the synchros do something while revving in gear, then I guess I'll add that to the list of things to check.
Fanatic, that's a good guess, but I had the water pump done at 85k. I'm at 103k now. Not saying it couldn't happen, but it just makes the likelyhood a lot less. Would the water pump make noise when I rev it in neutral, or no?

I think the noise of me spinning the tires is louder than the squeal, so no, I don't think it gets worse when I spin them. I'm not sure I understand you, do you mean you have the same noise and your trans has a bearing problem?

When my WP was going it would sometimes squeel in N. It didn't like to shut up when it was raining out though... Before you start tearing the trans apart I would check the throw-out bearing and pilot bearing. Hopefully it will be a cheap, somewhat easy fix here.

Ok I just watched the video, sounds like there is some power in the car. How modified is it? Stock clutch? Will the squeel persist if you just sit at the mentioned RPM levels? Now that I actually saw the vid I think it is most likely the throw out bearing, possibly the pilot bearing or the clutch itself. It seems like you are getting this noise right around the peak power region of the RPMs. Did I notice the CEL on as well?

A "dry" synchro may cause a noise but not that one. Your gonna be dropping the trans anyway so drain and fill. I would personally recommend using 1qt of Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer in the trans. That **** is like molassis. Took me 20 ****** minutes to let it drain down the funnel in to the trans. A synchro assures proper shifting between gears. They are located between all the gears and act as a "buffer" They usually have a gear ratio somehwere between the ratio of the gear your switching from and the one your switching to. Synchros is the last thing I would think this issue is.

I have no idea, this is the first sound ive heard like that yet.....
def try changing out the tranny fluid first tho...it may be the axles...u never know....think about what turns on the motor when its in gear as opposed to what turns when its in neutral....

Re: (CoupeVtec2k)
Hrm, I'm pretty sure it's the clutch at this point. I don't hear any weird noises at idle, nor anything when revving in neutral. My car is turbocharged, but it's just a little greddy 15g. The other day when I was driving it hard, it felt like the RPMs were climbing too fast for how slowly I was gaining speed - it felt like clutch slippage.

**** dude why didnt u say it was turbo'd before?
that could be anything at high revs, most likely you're turbo is overspooling....
think about it, a smaller turbo will rev fine in neutral when its not pulling the car, but when its got the weight of the car trying to pull the wheels harder, it gets stressed out and can only rev so fast....
