you could try buffing them with some good polish. dont use any compound or anything, then you would have some nice scratches to mess with.
should work pretty well. then just shine them up with your favorite glass cleaner!

Lemon juice or vinegar. Sounds weird but they're acids. Water spots are alkaline deposits. And acid would get rid of 'em in no time. Trust me.

I detail cars for a living and I come across a lot of hard water spots. Now some of those things that were said will help, but steel wool works the best. Just get like a piece of steel wool, you know like a S.O.S pad or brillo pad, If you can get some with out cleaner already in it like a S.O.S. pad that would be better. Now just pray you cleaner whatever it is, and scrub the window with the steel wool, and then wipe as normal, and BAM! you have got clean windows. Another reason I like to use steel wool even if threre arent any water spots is because it gets a bunch of other **** off that just the class cleaner alone wont get.

OK I also detailed cars for a living, even though Im 19 I've gotten around some nasty water spots.
This will work FOR SURE:
A thin razor blade and windex or water.
Spray it on the window and carefully with an angle of 45 degrees OR LESS scrap it off.

Steel wool works great. Used it on many many cars but you have to make sure to get 000 and keep it moist. You can either use water to do so or I use glass cleaner (I work at a glass shop).
I've heard that vinegar works from a lot of people but never tried it.
You can remove some spots with a razor blade but only fresh ones and most people do more damage with the razor blade than good.
The Mr. Clean Autodry thing works but very slowly and poorly, been about 10 threads in the last week about it.
I use a Hydrochloric acid based water spot remover that I get from work. Wipe on and wipe off, that easy. Then use Rain-X on all windows to keep them from coming back.

Works great, and at the same time you are preventing them in the future.

Very true. I only detaled cars for a short while professionally, but I still have friends relatives and neighbors that pay me very well to take care of their cars. My friend turned me on to the clay bar thing to get waterspots off of windows and it works GREAT. Plus you don't have to worry about getting those chemicals the guys above are using on your paint.

Clay bar works too. But if you don't have one (you should get one just because ) or you can spend the $.50 on a thing of lemon juice or a bottle of vinegar. Won't mess up your paint at all.
